Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

How many different reindeer are there????

Recommended Posts

ok, so I am trying to get my cookies straight.

How many different blowmolded reindeer are there? I thought there were just 2 sizes, the larger ones that go with the 2 piece santa sleigh (i believe Empire made these ) and then the smaller version which goes with the 1 piece santa sleigh. But I think somewhere along the line, someone else bought the molds.

So can someone please set me straight. I need to get 6 more of the larger ones for the 2 piece santa/sleigh, but want to make sure i am getting the right ones since ebay (probaly where i am oging to end up finding them) isnt always descriptive enough.

Thanks in advance

Matt

You have the original Empire version these are the exact same size as the ones with the detachable antlers, Empire put out the detachable antler version later,GF. also remakes them. I have 6 of the one you have and 2 with the detachable antlers that I found at a thrift store. I like the originals best I used the smaller empire deer as rudolph check out my pic in the other thread.Tom

I don't have a blowmold sleigh or reindeer but would think that mixing and matching reindeer would be interesting. After all, all the deer don't look alike! :) Opinions?

My 9th reindeer for any set will be a different reindeer - Rudolph

Even if I have a matching 9th, I will use a different reindeer

Other then that I like them all the same (the 8)

I never thought about mixing them up. I have five grand venture and have been trying to get my hands on four more but the prices for them on ebay are crazy, maybe I'll mix in some general foam ones...here's a picture of the beco deer I found at a flea market last summer. I might try to get a brown poloron or beco for my Rudolph.

I mix 'em up as much as I can. I have 4 of the smaller GV 'deer on the street side, with four Empire/GF ones away from the street; that way the bigger ones can be seen behind the smaller ones. Rudolph, up front, happens to be an old Empire one. If I had to do it over, I'd use a small GV reindeer for Rudolph (he's supposed to be an adolescent, after all). I also got tired of all the Empire 'deer having one color of antler, and all the GV 'deer having a different, lighter, color. So a few years ago I spray-painted about half of the original antlers two or three different colors, so now almost ALL of my reindeer are ever-so-slightly different. The GV antlers are also mounted with one-half pointing forward and the other half pointing backwards.

Don't EVEN ask what I've done with my Nativities!

Wow, everyone has some great ideas. I'm just like Denise, I never thought of mixing them up. I too have only about 5 GV and don't want to pay the crazy EBay GV prices. I got a few great deals on an Empire sleigh and 10 or 12 reindeer this summer so it's looks like I'll be using that sleigh instead. I love Hoyt's idea of the two different sizes. I never thought of that either. I'll probably wind up doing what Dave, Chad, and Jim Cars are doing with the smaller reindeer for Rudolph. Chad, your sleigh looks great. Thanks to everyone for the ideas.

-Jim

BTW, Nice reindeer Denise. I'm sure you could sell those and fund your GV reindeer with the money.

DeniseR, Do you realize that you've found the Beco deer that Carrie Sansing has been looking for for many years?! If you don't need them would you consider selling them to Carrie? I know it would make her extremely happy! (I haven't talked to Carrie about this). In the past, I've emailed her about some deer that were on ebay in case she missed it. I'm sure she be excited just to see that picture!

I do mix mine up and I found that people seemed to like it. I'll be doing them a bit differently this year, but they will stay mixed up.

Last year Rudolph was a Beco deer (complete with red bulb nose modification). The other 8 were: 2 TPI, 4 Empire, and 2 Poloron. I rationalize this craziness two ways, reindeer don't all look alike and it gives me an opportunity to use the different deer.:P

Yeah, I know they are... Carrie saw the pictures last summer. I just bought the sleigh a couple months ago to go with my deer. So now I have the Santa, deer and sleigh, oh yeah, and the little round snowman that I'm going to sit in the sleigh with Santa.
