  • Christmas 2017 countdown has begun. Most people reveal their displays the day after Thanksgiving. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

PlanetChristmas is getting a face lift.

I don't know how many she painted but during those years Union Products produced and sold approximately 250,000 pair a year.

Yes, Cado/UP has them in pink, Caribbean blue and purple, we have a pair of each, I have only taken pictures of the pink ones at this time.  Of course they also make the Zombie flamingos but they are from different molds.  The pink Cado ones are shown here.

Mel that is an excellent post.  I would love to see if you have any other pictures of blow molds being made.  It is so interesting!  :-)

Here are a couple that I posted a year or two ago.  These are a bit more detailed and in color.  They are of the large UP Realmingo.

The Featherstone Flamingo, as seen when it comes out of the mold.

Factory worker punches the Featherstone flamingo out of the plastic molding after it comes out of the machinery.

Does UP still sell the flamingos?

I saw some of the Cado/Union flamingos for sale Saturday (1/21) at Hobby Lobby.  They were $19.99.  (Hobby Lobby has a coupon every week for 40% off any one item.)

I guess I should check Hobby Lobby here they haven't had any blow molds in the past.  Did they only have the pink ones or did they have the Caribbean blue and purple ones also?

I only saw pink the pink ones.  I only saw 4 sets so it doesn't appear that they have very many.  They were in with the new Spring merchandise.  It looked to me like the Spring merchandise had just been put out recently.  They were on a table on one of the main aisles.  It's possible that they had more in some other location.  I didn't see any more but I did not search the whole store.

I got a set of the blue ones a couple years ago at At Home (Garden Ridge).  Garden Ridge is just starting to stock their Spring items.

The flamingos were with the Spring merchandise (not Christmas) which appeared to have just been put out.  I haven't ever seen holiday blowmolds at Hobby Lobby (but I've heard others say that they had them in the distant past).  I wouldn't assume that they won't have the flamingos just because they didn't have Christmas 'molds.  I'd be willing to bet that all the stores will have the flamingos.

Any idea where to find the purple ones?  I bought the pink ones from Lowes a few years ago.

I found a good deal on the purple ones on Amazon last year I think they were about $20 with free shipping at the time.  I don't see any on Amazon now, I only buy the Union Products ones, either the original Union Products or the new Cado ones.  I still need to find a set of the Union Products/Faster Form ones yet.

Mel, I as well have a pair of the Blue flamingos that came from Garden Ridge/At Home a couple years ago.
Should also note the flamingos Lowe's sells is not Cado/UP ones. Unless things changed because the set I bought from there a couple years back are not them

It must have been an odd conversation whenever someone asked what her job was.  "I paint flamingo beaks."  :D
