  • Christmas 2017 countdown has begun. Most people reveal their displays the day after Thanksgiving. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

New computerised show

Recommended Posts

I jumped into the Christmas light show Wormhole this year. And I really like my neighbors they are good people and I don't want to piss the off. I was thinking of going over to their houses over the next few days and showing them my computerized simulation of my show to show them what I'm thinking is going to happen this year. I was also thinking of inviting all my neighbors over for an unveiling party. Also at the beginning and end of my show  I have a recording of my voice saying please be courteous to my neighbors and don't block the road or the driveways . Do you guys have any other suggestions of things I could do to make sure that I don't anger The Neighbors.

I hand deliver a Christmas card with a box of candy to all of my neighbors around me every year and make sure that I talk with them throughout the year. I've never had a problem.

We have the kids hand out hot chocolate and candy canes a couple nights throughout.  Last year we had a cold night and drug the firepit to the driveway by the road during one of them.  Just throw a post on the community page....and it is a great time for neighbors to get together and meet.  Heck, I have gotten bottles of wine and cards left in our mailbox throughout the year just to say thankyou.

I would like to build a grill to cook chimney cakes and hand those out.  If you haven't had one...they are incredible.  I saw them in a Christmas Bazar in Budapest, tried one and was hooked!

Why do you think its going to piss them off? Do they hate Christmas, do they hate fun? Are your neighbors all GRINCHS?!?!

I don't want to be a debbie downer here but...do you think traffic is going to be a problem? Did you have  a large display before that drew traffic? If you had one before, traffic will be relatively the same so no worries there. If its your first year traffic will probably be slow. I had the same thoughts my first year "OMG the neighbors are going to hate all the traffic", but since it was a new show traffic was light (and trust me, I was crushed until I came on here and people told me its to be expected). Its my 4th year now, we have 200 FB followers and have been in the local paper a few times. Traffic still is not crazy, but we have at least a handful of cars on the slow nights and my neighbors have not once complained.

My advice: do what I did- set it all up and just let it roll, don't need to tell them anything.  If you don't make it a big deal, neither will they. My neighbor across the street called me the first night and said he was sitting in his window, tuned a radio to our FM transmitter station, drinking hot chocolate with his kids and having a blast. The surprise of it happening was half the fun for them and now every year they like to see whats new or what new songs I have added. Deal with complaints if they come in, always be friendly to them and try to see their side.. Also like someone said above "cookies", everyone loves cookies.

Are you planing to use an FM transmitter or have outside speakers? Outside speakers turned all the way up so your neighbors hear the same songs over and over and over .... that might annoy them. I don't do that so someone who does may have advice for you on that.

I have an fm transmitter so it'll be quiet. I was worried because I am by far the youngest person on my street (by nearly 30yrs) and talked to my across the street neighbor and he and his wife told me because I showed them the Christmas Light show on my pc and they know what it looks like and none of the other 1pm coffee and cookie club members (most of the people on the street)  they are able to Lord it over them.  Apperantly when I started putting up lights 2 weeks ago my house has become the center  of discussion guessing what that "kid" will do next. I guess I worried in vain

I think I get more comments setting up than any other time....neighbors have told me they have the most fun driving by everyday to see what was added.

As for the "elderly" neighbors, one woman lives down the street and tells me she has the perfect view from her kitchen table.  She just tunes in the radio and watches every night.  When I see the close neighbors outside, I always tell them every year to let me know if it runs too late....too loud...etc...I won't be offended.

We are totally static...had to dole out $$$$$ for a roof this year:blink: So hopefully next year, go animated. Our neighbors have 7 kids combined and never had any problems with traffic:) Started this past Monday , putting up the second story lights (been 70° out) and the kids have been watching:) I have had one elderly neighbor say, if I want to decorate her 25ft blue spruce, go for it!! I would love to!! Not sure if she wants the power bill for 600 c9 though haha. There is always next year....I have had super feedback from the neighbors, which is good. I did worry ,also, from last year and not a worry at all:)
