  • Christmas 2017 countdown has begun. Most people reveal their displays the day after Thanksgiving. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

Cado/Union Blowmolds at Menards!

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I went to my local Menards to see what sort of blow mold selection they had this year. As I assumed, not many GFP ones because of them going out of business, but to my surprise, the had a Cado/Union Santa, Snowman, Mrs. Claus, and Noel Candle! I'm going to try to get the Santa and the snowman this year at least. Are they at any one else's local Menards? I do feel sad GFP is closing next year, But i'm glad they'll have Cado ones. what do you think about Cado/Union?

I think it's really awesome that they saved some of the molds from Union.  I believe they also have some Grand Venture and some TPI molds.  I've always liked the Union snowman.  I'm glad they are still making it.

Paint apps are okay, much better than the GF slop as of late.

These aren't that bright in person, looks like they spent a few seasons outside. Still better than nothing.

It looks like they just painted the whole hat black instead of putting the stripe in it.  What were the prices?

All the Menards by us have them. 59.99 for the santa and snowman. 39.99 for Mrs. Claus. I think the candle was 15.99

At a local store (not a chain) near me they had a Cado Produced TPI nativity set (the one with Mary holding the baby Jesus).

Was it a TPI Nativity or Grand Venture Nativity?  The Cado 2017 catalog shows the Grand Venture Nativity.

Do believe it’s the Grand Venture one.

Yes, my local menards had the same prices. $60 for a bumpy snowman. Its crazy.

It almost seems like a marketing game to me. I wonder if they price them high, knowing people will wait a few weeks and happily buy them when theyre half off.

But If they priced them at $30 before the holidays, people are still inclined to wait to get a sale after the holidays. Either way, many people will wait for them to go on sale...why not get 30 rather than 15. right?

Me?...i  find nice solid lightly used ones for $3 at garage sales.

Quite a few were purchased at regular price as five snowmen and four Santa remain. There is a bunch of candles still left though.

There was plenty of overstock in the mezzanine the day I took the original photos.

That's fine to wait for the garage sales and take pot luck at what might become available, in our area we don't see blow molds at garage sales and very rarely in thrift stores.  After this year we probably won't see much of the blow molds in the stores either other then made in China ones.  We never see any Cado blow molds in the stores here, to get those we have no choice other then to pay the higher prices and add the shipping.  We won't see any Cado in the garage sales in the near future either because there are none sold around here for them to be available as used in the semi near future.

If you’re in or around Chicago, Rosebud Antiques in Countryside, IL has a huge selection of vintage blow molds. Prices are kinda high but they have a huge selection of old blow molds. Bought a Grand Venture Green Bay Packers snowman from there. Lots of cool blow molds if you don’t mind the higher prices.

They’re bitchy till you let them know you’re serious about buying and will spend money. I told them I was gonna leave with one no matter what and they were very helpful and nice after that. Even let me go into the back room by myself to look without any hesitation.
