  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

50 ft Merry Christmas Sign

Recommended Posts

After about 5 days worth of work, I've completed our new Merry Christmas Sign!!  It is about 50 ft long and close to 4ft high. Our old one was made out of PVC pipe that formed the individual letters using incandescent light bulbs. It was a complete pain to put up every year and ate away at our time that could be used for other decorations.

My Dad was at his second home "Menards" and came across their green painted fencing that was 50 ft long with 2" x 4" squares. Bought our lights from Home Depot as they had the best price for continous on LED lights for $11 (with tax). This allowed me to unplug any unused lights to give that nice distinct definition of each letter. Each light was zip tied twice to stop the lights from twisting, especially with storage. Which, in the end can just be rolled back up and tucked in away in a corner. 3 things I would have done differently is:

  • Capitalized the R's as I already have gotten crap for it by 3 people.
  • If we had more money and more experience, probably would have used rope light
  • Did 4" spacing instead of 2" for the MERRY section. I'll probably fix this next year by just moving the MERR back as there is over 1 ft of space to work with before the M

My fingers hurt, bled, and went numb from all the zip tying, but now I have calluses a professional guitarist would be jealous of haha.

Grand Total:

  • 724 Lights
  • 1624 Zipties (I zip tied the unused lights as well to keep them from hanging)

I like it.  I might steal this idea for next year.  One thing you will want to purchase to save your hands from cuts, is a set of flush cutting pliers to cut off those sharp ends on the zip ties.
