  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

Info request on Union Products candy canes.

I'm looking for any information on these candy canes.  They were made by Union.  The box shows that they were sold by Sears, and the shipping mark show they shipped to Minneapolis/ St. Paul area.  They are 17 inches tall with small steel bars for mounting.  The bars slide into the bottom.  Each one has the clip on the back as if they might hold a C9.20171226_103407.thumb.jpg.6917724f90b330791c9b8c0834ccdf4b.jpg

Those appear to be the Union Products #2715 "Holly Garland Cane Set" and originally came with a C9 ½ light set and garland.  The early ones came in three colors, red, white and green.  They are shown as early as 1959 and as late as 1967 in the Union Products catalogs.  They are shown in the Sears Christmas catalogs with the garland and lights as late as 1968 and in the 1969 & 1970 Sears catalog they are shown with lights and red bells.  In the 1971 Sears catalogs they are red and white striped with the lights and bells.

Mel, thank you once again for your wealth of knowledge.  I just wish I could find the light string and Garland to go with them.  Do you have a picture you could post? Maybe I can make the light string and add some garland.

Sorry to say I don't have any good pictures of the canes with the garland and lights.  The Sears catalog pictures are very small and don't really show any detail and the only Union Products catalog page I have that shows them is a black and white photo copy.  Here is the UP catalog page.
