Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

I was able to pick up 25 boxes of lights today from target for 70% off today and i am very happy about that. I also got 2 merry and bright signs from  the home depot for 20 bucks each and they are VERY nice. I stopped by Walmart today and saw one of the reindeer crossing signs on the shelf. i think it was the display and had a sign on it that said "dspl 5.00" i figured that meant 5 dollars off but ended up meaning be 5.00 because it "dident have a cord". did it come with a cord in the first place? lol. i cant find a spot for the cord. i guess i cant complain it was only % bucks and im SO excited

I've got a reindeer crossing sign. Shouldn't be a spot for a cord since it's battery powered. I am switching mine to have a cord though. It's a royal pain to get to the on off switch.

I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for Walmart to go %75 off.  Should be today or tomorrow if the last 20 years are any indication.

They are from Home Depot

Nice, wish I would have gotten one of those. Is out the same height as the Walmart reindeer sign?

I also wish I would have gotten some large ornaments for outdoor trees. I need some new ones, maybe some flashier design. Was also hoping for some lighted bows to go under the garage lamps.

I got a deal that kicked me right into the retro fit C-9 bulbs.  I was in Home Depot this weekend looking for storage boxes for my reindeer.  I was walking around the area, and looked over at the Christmas stuff still left.  I went to the shelf and looked down and saw 2 beat up boxes that held 500ft spools of C9 sockets at 12" spacing.  They never have those!  I opened them to make sure they were what I was thinking and they were, still wrapped in the plastic wrapping!  I got excited, then i looked up and saw the price...I about had an accident.  They were priced at $49.50 each!!!  I grabbed both boxes and put them in my cart before someone else realized what they were.  I went to the register and had them verify the price; it was correct.  I had been looking to upgrade after this year, but it was going to be pricey.  Now with that purchase and the pre-sale going on at HLE, it's very workable!  All i could say, was "Thank you, Jesus!!!"  I just had to share the story with Planet Christmas.

Nice! I still have had a chance to make it into our other home Depot. I'm guessing they are picked clean at this point.

Don't forget the thrift stores.  They need to get rid of Christmas items too.  I considered buying an artificial tree for use outside before Christmas but didn't get around to it.  This morning I stopped in at the Goodwill Outlet store and found two trees, a 7 foot tall "birchwood spruce tree" and a 7.5 foot tall "fir" tree.  The original prices were on the boxes - Sears/Kmart $159.99 and Home Depot $88.  I bought the 7 foot one for $2.  The lady at the cash register told me that somebody had purchased six trees at the store the previous day.  It wasn't designed for outdoor use but if it only lasts for one season that is OK.

I set up the tree mentioned in the previous post and to my surprise the warranty card and instructions in the box said "General Foam Products".  It was made in China with the Kmart branding on the box but no mention of GFP on the outside.  I'm guessing that Kmart must have been a big retail outlet for GFP products.  I bought a GFP Santa blow mold in November and it had Kmart tags still on it.  The seller said he bought it at Kmart about 3 years ago but never displayed it.   All of the Sears stores in Las Vegas will be gone by the end of March and only two Kmarts are still in business.  In any case, the tree is complete and will be a beautiful addition to my display next season.
