  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

I apologize in advance for the quality (or lack thereof) of the photos My yard is a paradigm...it's a big front and side yard so there's plenty of room for decor but the yard slopes sharply from the street so i have to get creative in displaying things (like building elevated platforms). Here's the front yard which goes for a vintage theme

I know there was a thread about why was it always about the amount of lights but that's what people like to see and hear. How many lights we have and what we do with it. The snowmen and Charlie Brown Christmas tree are made out of rope light and the Nutcracker is a metal frame with LED ribbon light. Not the best to use when we have rain and freezing temperature. Will have to modify it for next time we set the display.

We are getting some early snow here in NYC. I took a few shots of my blow molds in the snow. Nothing fancy, I'm a poor photographer, just a few photos taken with my flipphone.

Hey PC family! I've been out of the PlanetChristmas loop for awhile. I occasionally monitor a few Christmas related sites and FB pages, but my job and family life has kept me too busy to stay connected with anyone. Those that have been a part of PC for many years like myself, know that I'm known for my ferris wheel and skating rink. I'm not saying mine are the best, there are many people here that have great ferris wheels and skating rinks. I've posted pictures, videos, and how-to's over the years. Yet I still get emails and my inbox is full of messages from people asking for help with one or the other. I am more than happy to help, but like I said, I've been out of touch and don't get on PC too often. I've transitioned into a RGB display for myself, and I've been trying to learn as much as I can in that world. But what I've learned in this process is that I, and many others, still miss the magic that a mechanical display can offer! My mechanical elements have all been sold off or torn down due to age and damage. However, I plan to bring back my ferris wheel. New, improved, and I intend to capture images along the way! Not for recognition. Not for any other reason than to hopefully have 1 more and possibly last necessary avenue for those interested in building a pvc ferris wheel. This will be easier for me than to try and respond to each and every request. It will also be cleaner having step by step pictures along the way. So be on the lookout in the next few months as I start the build. Probably early spring! As for the question of why a pvc ferris wheel....it just better fits my need. I started out with a wooden ferris wheel. It was beautiful. It also was heavy and difficult to store. There are people here that have metal ferris wheels, or gemmy, or whatever else. There is nothing wrong with those. Please don't assume I'm putting those down. Maybe one of those fit's your need/desire. My case for a PVC ferris wheel is this: PVC is cheap. It's lightweight and can be broken down or carried as a whole pretty easily. It is pretty weather resistant for 5 weeks out of the year, especially if you paint it (white even) to protect it. PVC is very easy to work with and requires no special tools. For me, a ferris wheel should be an octagon and that shape is very easy to achieve. A ferris wheel, whatever style you choose, gives a wow factor like nothing else in a display can achieve (in my experience and opinion of course). I hope you are as excited about it as I am. If you don't see anything from me, assume that I'm busy with life but please know that the build and the how-to is coming, and by all means don't hesitate to drop me a line with a friendly reminder. Knowing that people are interested will encourage me to do it even more than I already am!

Very sad news. I'm so glad I have my molds and will pamper them even more now that this has happened. You can look forward to the price of molds on ebay skyrocketing. Better get what you want from GFP and ebay, while you can still afford it. I wouldn't be surprised, if some China company buys the molds and then redesigns them to put crappy solar lights in them that only last for two hours and gives them that ugly bluish light look. My greatest fear is that the molds will be thrown away or sold to collectors that will never produce them again. I hate saying this, but I feel that we Christmas loving blow molders are a dying breed of people. It is true that there are some new lovers, but the truth is that a large majority of people in our country have been losing the Christmas spirit for many years. Just look at how many neighborhoods and homes are dark at Christmas across our land. Many cities and towns hardly put anything up. These things started a long time ago and just continues to get worse as the years roll on. Most Americans seemed happier and optimistic back in the 1950s, 60's , 70's, & 80's than today. I hope America finds its happiness again someday. No matter what happens, I'll keep putting my stuff up and hope the younger people will see what Christmas was once like in America. I need to just shut up, because talking about this brings me down. To all my fellow Christmas blow molders, I say keep the joy alive in your hearts and on your lawns and never let it die. Now I need to go look at my molds to lift my spirits back up again.

I have been taking a few pictures for blow molded.com recently, here is the TPI Santa Sled & reindeer (black nose version reindeer). The set with the black nose and this version of stand for the reindeer was made during the years 1997-2004. The set has the red reins for it, I just did not put them on for the picture since the pictures will be uploaded to the website separately. Mel

Ok, in a few posts including one on christmasfanclub, ans Planet christmas I have sent out a request wanting to buy a plastic sleigh, and 10 deer. Yes 10 deer and here is why............................this past year my 8 year old daughter (the only girl beside her mom, so yeah she gets special treatment lol) (and bless her heart she is the most gullible person on the planet) anyway, she was riding with me in my truck to pick up a payment for a job done in little rock. Well we were riding along listening to Christmas music on the radio and Rudolph by Gene Autry came on. She was singing her little heart out and when she gets to the part that says " But do you recall?" the most famous reindeer of all.....I stopped her and said "Emy what did you say?" so she repeated it and I told her thats not what it says........It says "but do you know Claude", and the most famous reindeer of all.......She kinda argued with me that I was wrong (I never cracked a smile) I proceeded to tell her this long drawn out story that Claude was a little unruly and they left him out of the cartoons because he was always in some sort of mischief. I went on to tell her that he lives in the village with all the Elf of a Shelf guys in Istanbul. Please try to imagine this beautiful little girl soaking in all of Dads wisdom, as I told her that Santa still lets claude go out with the rest of the team on Christmas but he has to run along beside them because there are not enough hitches on the sleigh. Well, me and the family has a good laugh after she went to bed that evening and I thought it was over...WRONG. Next day on a job site in Greenville SC my cell rings and its the school. I excused myself long enough to answer and be informed that during Chorus class Emy refused to sing it "right" because "my daddy said thats not right...and he is never wrong"...OH GOD I ABOUT DIED!!!! I had to explain the joke to the teacher. I thought boy Im glad thats over...WRONG....The lead Engineer had overheard the conversation and I got a full day....no...week of ribbing about not knowing the words to a kids song.....Well if you think it was over....WRONG AGAIN......A few weeks ago I decided to buy a sleigh and deer and make them appear to be wayyyyyy up high flying in my neighbors yard for 2017. I sat down with my laptop and started shopping, I found the most amazing 1977 Empire sleigh with 1 deer on ebay, next day I found an auction for 2 more deer, total of 3. I showed my daughter what I had found (she is my helper on christmas decorations, and pretty much the shot caller) and she says, you only need 7 more deer daddy, I told her I was just gonna get 8 and that would be enough, the said "Daddy you started this mess, now do it right...we gonna have 10"...........Me and my big mouth....I hope you enjoy it as much as I did doing it.....Don I copied and pasted this from my original post on Christmasfanclub and put it here hoping you guys would enjoy it, Don

I know that by Planet Christmas standards, I am a rank amateur. Still, I won an award from the Colonialtown Neighborhood Association for best decorated house in the Norman Rockwell (nostalgic) division. So I put a few pictures on Planet Christmas because I have enjoyed your company so much during the other months of the year. Aside from what can be seen in the photos, I have a star shower trained upward into a 300 year old live oak; blooming camellias and hibiscus, and, over 250 poinsettia blossoms throughout the property. Thanks for the thoughts you folks shared with me in 2016 and a very fine 2017 to you all! Doc

A few photo's I took over the holiday. Most everything was out, just a few large things weren't. Very similar to last year with a few additions, and repositioning's. The wreath is one of my favorite additions; believe it or not I got it for free off of craigslist with the faux greenery, I added everything else, and It folds in half. Still haven't made some minor repairs that need to be corrected with the trailer. I didnt actually get around to taking photos of the lights around the yard, but there was quite a bit. I had an even greater amount of traffic slowing down this year. With the unbelievably phenomenal deals of luck, chance, blessing, and skill that I've received this post-holiday sale, I can't wait for this year to fly by as I'm sure it will! I'll finally be able to light our maple. I'll post later on that note-

Not sure if this fits in with the topic but it seems to. We live in a city, typical urban street with detached and semi-attached houses on 20-60 foot wide lots so you don't have a lot of room for big displays. But I've always put up what I consider a lot of decorations. As time went by and I got older I started thinking why bother, it's a lot of work and does the rest of the family even care? Yes, I would get some compliments from people passing by and small kids seem to be mesmerized by it but not enough to make me feel it was worthwhile. So I started thinking of cutting back and maybe even stopping all together. I should mention here that we have an awning over our stoop and a trellis in our small front yard and they are decorated with at least a few strings of holiday or seasonal lights all year long. One cold night I am out there putting up the Christmas lights thinking to myself this is it, the last year, when an elderly woman with a walker passed by. She said, I always love looking at your lights, they are so nice to look at, they make me feel good. I asked her where she lived on the block. She said she did not live on my block she lived on the next block over from my street. Now this woman could barely walk so I asked how could she see my lights "all the time"? She pointed over to a tall apartment house on the next block and said, I live up there, on the top floor, I can look down and always see them from my window. Well, I have cut back over the years but I still always put out something and all year long. If for no one else I do it for her because I know she is looking down from somewhere and still enjoying the lights.

Nice family was outside looking at the lights, I told them they needed to have a radio to hear the music. The husband says "I can't believe I can't get the station streaming over the internet". I tried to explain it was just a little transmitter connected to my computer, it didn't register.

What's a few dollars more or less when I could have one of the loves of my life to look at when I wake in the morning. Please note, when I said one of the loves of my life I wasn't referring to the first love of my life, possibly the second but not the first. It would be impossible for me to look at the first love of my life when I wake in the morning because she is already up and watching Dr. Phil when I wake in the morning.

Well... I've finally finished my new characters for this year's display. I decided to go with the characters from Frozen and this is what I came up with. My 11 year old daughter painted Anna all by herself (other than the shading). She's told me that she wants to have her own Christmas display when she grows up... so I'm teaching her the process. AAaaahhh... it does an old man's heart good to pass along the traditions just as my father passed them along to me! ... and one more to give you an idea of the size of the characters. (FYI... the tree is 7' 9" tall)

Hi. New member here. Came across this site while searching for some information on a couple of items. I hope this isn't in the wrong forum. I'm sharing pics of our display. It's nothing dramatic or flashy. It's static (other than a few blinker bulbs on the lamp post garland) and contains less than 500 lights (for the light counters out there!) It's relatively simple; subtle. Vintage - maybe even "classic?" It doesn't matter - as long as it brings a little light to the neighborhood. Some minor details.. *House done with C7 ceramic bulbs, attached with brick clips, gutter/shingle clips, and zip ties. *Larger nativity figures use 15 watt bulbs. Choir and church also use 15 watt bulbs. Santa and Snowman use 25 watt bulbs. Red lamp post uses flicker bulb. *Noel candles were customized to include c7 lights in the flames. *No LED's, aside from the two spot-lights. *Wind is never an issue - thanks to heavy duty wooden stakes and metal (green mailbox posts) and, zip ties (these things are great!) Enjoy - and Happy New Year!

Wasn't sure where to put this. Thus is a photo of the Bronner's showroom in the late 50's. Lots of municipal GP stuff as well as mold craft carolers, life Size deer team and a Nativity. I roughly estimated everything in this photo would easily be worth $45 000 together at a collectors auction today. Crazy to think a ton of this stuff probably got trashed by end user...

I would like to hear if you have any funny comments from those who have watched your display. I’ll start; yesterday evening I went out to the road to pick up trash from the previous night’s viewers (a story in itself). A man stopped and asked me “why is this radio station so fuzzy at my house"? I asked where he lived; “in town” (that means at least 2 miles) I replied; I don’t think you can hear it at all there. He said; it’s just not right. I said; it would be illegal. Second; a lady came to the door and in the middle of the day asked me to turn on the display as she had driven so far. I politely let her know she would not be able to see anything anyway as the sun was out in full force. She went back out to the road and sat there for 20 minutes.

These aren't technically municipal decorations, they're more DIY projects. Most blow mold collectors have heard of "Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland" in Frankenmuth Michigan. The company was boosted from a sign painting company to Christmas store with a series of panels Wally Bronner himself built for Clare Michigan. They are just noma flat backs sold to the general public screwed to hand painted plywood, to create a 3D look. They are my profile pic. To find one would be amazing. To my knowledge the only ones still serving are in Bronner's store. A lantern one in the Wally Bronner memorial and a candy cane one in the program center. I'm thinking of making replicas myself. Anyone know if there are other originals out there? http://image.themorningsun.com/storyimage/MS/20141211/NEWS/141219952/AR/0/AR-141219952.jpg&maxh=400&maxw=667

How sweet of you to remember!!! You made my day! It was FABULOUS! We ended up using a 5500w generator that someone loaned us. It was noisy, but we put it on a carpet pad and the sides of the pickup truck along with blaring Christmas music helped drown out the generator. The team had a blast AND we won the award for "Best Use of Lights!" I'll try to attach some pics. Thanks again for asking!
