  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

  1. Here are pics of this years display. We had 35,000 lights this year, give or take a few. We got more visitors and lots of great comments also! Looking forward to new additions for next year. What do you all think? New additions this year were lights on the roof, swans in the pond, a larger pond, and a few new snowmen around.
  2. What color lighting do you prefer?

I do a static display and I stick to mainly white, red, and green, with a little blue mixed in for a water feature.
  3. Mega tree power

I do 10’ mega trees with 16 strands of lights on each one. One string goes up to the top and back down again, so it looks like I have 32 strands. I ziptie each end to a ring on the ground and then I just connect 8 sets in one direction end to end, and 8 sets in the other direction end to end. Then plug the remaining two male plugs into an ext cord and call it good. Never had any trouble with popping fuses or anything else. 8 sets doesn’t exceed the 3amp fuse rating. A kill-a-watt meter is a must for any decorator IMO. Good luck!
  4. Well I added another 5k or so lights this year to get up to 30k lights. My pond was a little bigger and I added the candycane stripes to the sides of the house. I won a contest in the local paper for best decorated house! What do you think?
  5. Looking for ideas and inspiration

I vote 'mega tree'. I have a couple of 12ft trees and they look great imo. I have 17 strings of lights going up and down, making it look like I have 34 strings. Pic for reference. I use a 10ft water pipe, I made my own hook head, and I use pvc conduit for the base ring.
  6. 2015 After Christmas sales

Walmart 50% off. Here was my haul this morning.
  7. My UK 2015 display

I like it. Simple and classy. I know how it is when you always want to do more. But I love what you put out. Merry Christmas!!!
  8. I don't like the show much anymore because it seems to be all about who can spend the most money and wow the judge with special effects. An average display has no chance to win and I don't know why they even feature non animated displays. They should have two shows. One for mega dollar displays and another for more traditional. Just my .02 worth.
  9. I have 3 blue chaser strings this year to simulate a running stream. Do I need to worry about protecting the controllers from the weather or can they handle rain?
  10. mwalz's 2015 Christmas Display!

Wow that looks awesome!! I love the arch over the driveway. Nice work!
  11. I'm all static and prefer it (for myself anyway). Your house looks great!
  12. My display, 2015

Finally reached Griswold status! Just over 25,000 lights. IMG_5739.MOV
  13. My display, 2015

Thanks. All my lights are incans. What I did was lay down this blue decorative mesh that I found at Hobby Lobby to keep the lights up off the grass. In the stream I have 3 chasers mixed in with regular blue lights and the pond is just regular 100ct blue minis layed out. I have about 4300 lights total in the stream/pond. The blue mesh really makes it pop and keeps the lights from sinking into the grass.
  14. My display, 2015

Thanks guys! This has been 5 years in the making as I keep adding each year. The pond and stream are my new additions and favorites this year. I added a few blue chasers to the stream to give it the appearance of running water. I'm very happy how it turned out. May add some lights to the roof next year!
  15. Venting... stupid icicle lights

That is crazy! I have the same lights and store mine in a similar fashion. I hang them in the rafters in the attic. Mine are 5 years old and have held up remarkably well. The shimmering icicles really look great. I hate that you've had so many issues with them.
  16. Sparkle Lights?

Yep those are the ones. They have held up well over the years and I love the shimmering effect they give my display. I'm all incandescent with my lights and plan to keep it that way.
  17. Sparkle Lights?

I have random twinkle icicle lights on my house and it really makes a static display "pop". I got them from Home Depot about 5 years ago. They are made by GE, commercial grade. They cost about $17 per string but they have held up well. I love the shimmer it gives to my roofline.
  18. Candy Cane Arch

Good work! That does sound very time consuming but the end result looks very good. I prefer things you build over stuff just bought from the store. Nice to have something the neighbors don't have! Hehe.
  19. Candy Cane Arch

That looks awesome! How did you make the candy canes? PVC?
  20. F/S - Blue Incans

    Sent you a message.
  21. Set Your Dvr's

I was a little disappointed that the huge display won last night. There's no way other normal folks can compete with that. I agree they should split it up between static and animated displays. The show is entertaining, but that male host is a bit much for me.
