Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. I use wirekat's LED spotlights to illuminate my cutouts. I have never tried CFL's since I use LOR and LOR does not like CFLs.
  2. I agree with the use of transfer paper. I always prime the board before tracing and cutting out. That way, I can trace the entire pattern at once. After they are cut out, I fill in the cut edges of the plywood and prime the cut edge. As far as shading, I can't offer any advice there; once I cut them out, my wife takes over and does all the painting. When finished, she gives them back to me so I can coat them with polyurethane.
  3. If you are planning to use one next year, then buy your fog fluid this year after Halloween. I bought 30 bottles from Walmart at 74% off last year. It's not a big seller, so wait until they mark it down to at least 75% off.

  6. How about a "nostalgic" window like the dept stores used in the 50's -- the window in "A Christmas Story" with the trains running. Perhaps you can find some 50-60 era toys to display in the window.
  7. My wife has done well over 150 cutouts for our display. She carries the paint color onto the cut edge of the plywood. She uses the paint pens for lines to accent details. She uses white and silver for black and some other dark colors, black for other colors. Alot of her color changes are done through shading and dry brushing though.
  8. Been ordering from them for the past five years and never a problem.
  9. I use monoprice all the time. Bought a 100 ft toslink cable with metal ends for $26 to link my computer to my surround sound system in a different room.

  15. Bet you have to pay extra for the external fuel tank and solid rocket boosters too!

  17. Better get it now; won't last long! 32% off Space Shuttles at NASA Shop Now! 32% off + free shipping NASA has discounted the price of its soon-to-be-retired space shuttles to $28,800,000 each. With transportation to a major airport included in the price (does that count as free shipping?), that's the best deal we've ever seen on a space vehicle. According to the Press Association article, Atlantis and Endeavour are "up for grabs", and the new, Smithsonian-sealed Enterprise may be available for purchase. (Enterprise never made it to space.) If you're lucky enough to get a shuttle, you must display it indoors in a climate-controlled building. Deal ends February 19, and a delivery date of "late 2011" is scheduled. Of note, NASA is also offering the space shuttle's main engines for free, a price drop of up to $800,000 and the lowest total price we've seen. Posted 8 hr 33 min ago Hotness: Report an error
  18. Isn't demonstrating artificial snow in Minnesota like trying to sell ice to an eskimo?:giggle: I should be nice though; I spent three years in Duluth compliments of the USAF. Thoroughly enjoyed the winters, once I became climatized. Was stationed there in July and think I was the only person wearing a heavy coat in the middle of summer. But then, I went directly to MN from Southeast Asia monsoon weather.

  20. We use wood cutouts extensively in our display and they have suffered no adverse affects with the snow machine. The cutouts are sealed with two coats of polyurethane, but I don't think that would make a difference if only a good quality exterior paint were used either.
