  • Christmas 2017 countdown has begun. Most people reveal their displays the day after Thanksgiving. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

  1. I'd be interested in the plans also.
  2. 50 ft Merry Christmas Sign

Looks Great. The idea is a good one.
  3. Pics of anyone's display progress

Finally getting a chance to post. Here's my display.
  4. Viewing Public Say the Darndest Things

I was working on final touches, the lights were on the first night, 12/1, cars are slowing down as they pass by the house getting a good look. waved to one and said come on in, as we allow folks to walk through the display, They left on the spot. Another car stops right in front of the house, I hear, "look at that, did you see that" my wife says to come in, this couple pull in they and the kids get out, and have a great time looking around. That's the reason I do it. the kids faces were spectacular.
  5. displaying my Union elves

Very Nice, I like the train Idea, mind if I borrow it for next year?
  6. My Score but need advice

I have made a 4 x 4 post frame and I cover it with the white/ grey painters canvas. I have a 4 X 8 platform using floor flanges and Black pipe to hold the molds in place. We cover the deck with straw or hay to add hopefully a more realistic look. My pictures are too large to upload, I'll have to get one with my phone.
  7. Pawn Shop Find

The only issue with them is someone in the past used what looks to be sheet rock screws to secure them. So several holes in the back of each where screws penetrated. As long as the forward facade is good, I'm happy.
  8. Pawn Shop Find

I found these at a local pawn shop. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and a pair of drummer boys. great price.
  9. Here are final pictures of the carousel.
  10. my Display 2017

    Looks Great.
  11. Plywood Cutouts

    Very nice. great job.
  12. Who's ready to light up?

I go Live 12/1 every year, So some years I am right after T-day or a week after like this year, helps me with time to get it all set up. I start tomorrow putting everything out.
  13. A find I wasn't expecting.

Thanks for the great information Mel. The flame tops don't have the ring where the tabs would lock it on, they are flat, so they may be replacements. Someone put small screws in to hold them on. I just found a small crack in the bottom of the base on each one, but it doesn't show or hamper the use of them.
  14. A find I wasn't expecting.

I went to the local consignment shop just to see what was there. Most of the booths were the usual with some small indoor Christmas items. turned the corner and what to my wondering eyes did appear, these two Empire red candles with the pointsetta design. The price was in my budget so I brought them home. They have 1969 molded into them near the logo, not sure if its the year or part number.
  15. powering my carousel motor - help

Thanks Qberg, I think there may be wood chips in the lazy susan, need to pull it apart and see if that is the issue. Upon the advice of my brother, I put my meter in series with the power supply and motor, when it is running fine, it pulls about 5.25 to 6 amps. When it glitches, it is pulling over 10 amps, so the question is what is causing that. If this doesn't fix it I may have to go non motorized for this year and work out the kinks for next year. Very disappointing for me, but I need it in the display next week.
