  • Christmas 2017 countdown has begun. Most people reveal their displays the day after Thanksgiving. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

  1. Definitely interested, since I will try to use my rotator motor. Was wondering if we will be able to modify the size of the ferris wheel (smaller)?
  2. Reindeer spinning contraption

DO NOT go up on the roof for the sake of pics. When you take it down after Christmas is fine; I can wait. Was curious is all. [email protected]
  3. I watched your video and find your display to be very creative and beautiful. Looks like you put a lot of thinking and work into it.
  4. Reindeer spinning contraption

You said you may post more details about the reindeer contraption. Would really like to see the details; that is one cool set-up. As part of my Christmas display, I have one of those very-heavy electric rotator motors that Shell Oil and Sunoco used to spin their signs back in the day. I have built horse-themed carousels, penguins riding on a sled, and this year, I have a snowman with ice skates spinning on a platform. How on earth did you get that up on your roof????

  7. Want to LED's in blow mold

Thank you to both Brian Mitchell and qberg for directing me to HD to buy a step bit. The step bit was used to create a larger-diameter hole in the back of the nutcracker blow mold (see the first two pics of the before and after holes, including the LED bulb from HD). The third pic shows the difference in light distribution between the standard 7w light bulb that comes w/the blow mold, and the newly-installed LED bulb. Not a huge difference, right? The last pic shows the packaging of the LED bulbs from Home Depot that come 3 in a pack for 5.72. I guess the good thing is that the LED bulbs, which I expected to be a LOT brighter will at least last a very long time. One last note: the reason I went with LED's is due to their giving off an equal amount of light distribution vs the incandescent.
  8. Does anyone know the best way to increase the diameter of the hole in blow molds? Bought some LED's but they are too big around. Would like to make a nice clean hole for the LED to fit w/out destroying the blow mold.
  9. After Christmas sales

Can't believe I'm reading all the posts about Lowe's and HD either running low or sold out of Xmas stuff. In Northeast Ohio, the Lowe's and HD are practically fully stocked. The week after Xmas, markdowns are at 50%; then after New Year's, it's 75% off. By then, it's stuff you don't actually need.
  10. Who's ready to light up?

Good luck with your surgery. When you feel better, how about a pic of those inflatables all lit up?
  11. And....we have a problem.😭

L.J. I respect your opinion about the white LED's. When retailers began selling LED's 7-8 years ago, they first caught my attention when residents used them in porch lights. They were harsh, too bright, and not like the soft glow of a nearby incandescent. However, I have adjusted to them, and appreciate that they use much less energy especially when we use them in our Christmas displays. I would not be able to use as many in my display if I used incandescents only.

    Say it ain't so.....
  13. Best blow mold light?

This year, I'm using a lot of blow molds that I have not used in a long time. Some are from flea markets, etc. Most have the standard 7w night light bulb, which I believe is too dim for some of the darker molds. Two of the molds I got from elsewhere came with two incandescent-style 40-watt bulbs that provide an excellent source of light for those blow molds. Is it ok to use those (too hot?) or can I get an idea from forum members what bulbs they use and where to get them. Has anyone tried those 7w LED bulbs? Reviews on those were they don't provide a uniform light coverage. Thnx for your opinions.

`Ya filthy animal` is actually one of my favorite things to say -- and the BESTEST part of `Home Alone'. I love that part of the movie. vette-kid: how ironic! I actually have those two Disney neons, but sorry, did not recognize them in your display. You're right, they are pricey ($89 at Lowe's). I also bought the two Disney Halloween neons for Halloween for half-price, since it was the day after Halloween, and will use them next year.

vette-kid: what are those two lit-up items on the fence gate? Are they blow-molds?
