  • Christmas 2017 countdown has begun. Most people reveal their displays the day after Thanksgiving. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

  1. Silent site?

I think all we can do is to keep doing what most of us are already doing, and that is using every opportunity to guide people to PC. I can't count how many times I bring up PC when people ask me about my lights, whether it's at the antique shop buying a blow mold, or out front talking to passersby at night in front of my house. Just keep spreading the gospel...of Planet Christmas (the other would be fine as well!).
  2. Pics of anyone's display progress

Debbiedowner, how in the world do you get the video on your garage door? That is mesmerizing!
  3. Viewing Public Say the Darndest Things

I couldn't agree more with RAB. I don't care what you put out, or how much, or how it looks. Just put something out! Nothing more depressing than a dark neighborhood. Does anyone else feel like a hypocrite when the passersby go on and on about all the hard work you do so everyone can enjoy it? I have to admit, if nothing more than a stray dog, a wino, and the mailman saw my display, I'd still do it because I enjoy it, whether anyone else sees it or not.
  4. I switched to LED's because it was going to cost me thousands of dollars to add another box to my house. For most people the savings in electricity will never make up for the cost of LED's over incan, which I found can be anywhere from five to ten times as much. I tell people the only reason you should switch to LED's is because they like the look, or they have used up their available power with incan.
  5. Pics of anyone's display progress

Jeff, that's one of the prettiest pictures I've seen. Stephen, you've got to be using a drone to get those amazing pics.
  6. This early snow on my blow molds

I'm not a fan of snow, but it makes everything look beautiful. those are some wonderful pictures bbskip.
  7. Viewing Public Say the Darndest Things

EWTalley, as I bundle up, layer after layer, to go outside and pass out candy canes to the passersby...I'm really jealous of you right now!
  8. Silent site?

We joined blow mold nation a few months ago, and my wife loves it, even though she was never that interested in PC. It may just be different strokes for different folks. I don't know about the other sites, but I've gained more useful information on a wider variety of Christmas topics on PC than any site, magazine, tv show, etc. out there. Just a tiny fraction include learning how to roll up light strings and wrap trees, finding out that it is okay to put artificial trees out in the display, and the most recent info. came over the summer when I learned how to drop C-7 or C-9 light strings down the center of my noel candles. They look stunning this year! I don't know of anyplace else you can learn so many random Christmas things.
  9. Silent site?

I've noticed the last several years the Oklahoma PC site has been silent. In 2009 there were over 40 posts, and 2010 there were 27. In 2012 there were still 12, but since then it's tended to be just me. I know some have quit putting up lights, or just moved. I also wonder if some of the younger light enthusiasts have started using an LOR site instead? Does one exist?
  10. She got kicked by a mule. What did cousin Eddy say after the cat bit through the Christmas tree light cord?
  11. Jam or Jelly of the month club?
  12. Viewing Public Say the Darndest Things

I'm just hoping to make it to 60, and then I'll see what I do. That is amazing that you're doing all of this in your 70's!
  13. I just bought this Poloron Drummer Boy. The vendor said it was from the 1950's, and an older friend mentioned she and her husband bought one of these same blow molds in the 1950's. However, on blowmolded it has the date as 1970's. Any idea what the real date is?
  14. Questioning the age of this blow mold

I haven't seen any like that one without the 'Noel' down the side, so I'm keeping it inside.
  15. Questioning the age of this blow mold

The next time, I will definitely consult blowmolded before buying anything.
  16. Questioning the age of this blow mold

Thanks. I'm just mad at myself, because I know better than to believe anything a vendor puts on an item!
  17. Questioning the age of this blow mold

Ok. I figured blow molded was accurate, and I never trust vendors. Thanks.
  18. displaying my Union elves

Okay, I mentioned weeks ago that I purchased some Union elves and was trying to decide how to display them. I've got them rigged up in my Christmas train (static display) in one of the train cars.
  19. Re-designing my 12' snowman

Well, I liked the first one, but the new one...WoW! I couldn't agree more with BaldEagle. Homemade are always the best because there's nothing else like it!
  20. displaying my Union elves

Here's a few more pics of my train.
  21. Viewing Public Say the Darndest Things

We stand outside and pass out candy canes, and people are always asking my wife if this is our display. She tells them, "No, we're just strangers who really have the holiday spirit!"
  22. displaying my Union elves

Sure, go ahead. Tonight I'll take pictures of the Engine and the rest of the cars and post it.
  23. Some of my 2017 Indoor Displays

You are after my 10 year old boy heart! I had that GI Joe set and Major Matt Mason as a kid. Fantastic display. We just acquired the fireplace and have been trying to figure out what to do. Now I know. Thanks so much for sharing and inspiring!
  24. My Rather Modest 2017 Display

Great job! Is that nativity a Poloron life sized set?
  25. Asking to follow

Same here. I didn't know you had to ask.
