  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

About my display

  1. I've been somewhat disappointed by this year's Christmas Light Fight. My specific issues are: 1. They don't go behind the scenes as much as in the past. I want to see light controllers, extension cords, how the wiring is organized, use of the software, wireless vs. wired, etc. Perhaps ABC should have either an extra half-hour of behind the scenes stuff or maybe do that on their website. 2. I want to know what these houses/neighborhoods look like on a typical evening leading up to Christmas. There has been an increasing focus on "special shows" (singing, dancing, the special ceremony to turn on the lights, etc.) when the judge arrives. I want to see a "normal" evening when no judges are around. Friends of mine who are not into lots of decorating have commented to me about how these "special shows" don't reflect a normal evening. 3. I am only interested in seeing displays that are put up by family and friends. Last year, it was particularly obvious that some homes had been decorated by a bunch of professionals / hired workers. It doesn't seem to be so flagrant like it was last year. I want to extend thanks to all of the families who participate in the Christmas Light Fight. You all do an amazing job. And a special congratulations to the neighborhoods who participated this week. It's one thing for someone to decorate their own home months in advance, but getting a whole neighborhood to do so is quite an accomplishment.
