  • Christmas 2017 countdown has begun. Most people reveal their displays the day after Thanksgiving. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

  2. not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but here goes. I'm looking for info on this Santa, sleigh and reindeer.manufacturer, date, if anyone has seen anything like it. It has been in my family for many years and we always used it in our front yard . my mom bought it from a coworker that had used it in his yard and it originally was his parents. I believe its mid-century but think it may have originally a commercial piece. the Santa was a half body that sat on a ledge in the melamine sleigh. (didn't have a close up of him) he and the reindeer made of an expandable type semi soft foam base covered with a linoleum type thin outer layer (they were repainted at some point before we got them) the deer are about 4' long and 3' high and the Santa is about 3' tall. unfortunately about 10 years ago the Santa was stolen and the reindeer were vandalized. was hoping to come across another set or replacement parts. sorry for the poor quality of the pic of the complete set it is the only one I could find of it on display. the close up of the bodies shows what they look like inside and the close up of the heads shows all the damage from vandalism and the head on the far left is the orignal paint. any leads would be appriciated. i think it was a one of a kind but would be awesome to find a replacement.
  3. Massive Antique Snowflakes for sale!

Snowflakes! Snowflakes! Snowflakes! I am selling a true DIY repair project for the Christmas handyman in all of you. I have 12 rather large antique snowflakes that are nearly 5 feet tall and are in need of repair and a good home. I picked them up from a picker in the Columbus area last summer who got them from the city of Columbus. Apparently these were build specifically for the city back in the 40s/50s and were place on the sides of some of the city buildings. They have seen better days, but are most certainly salvageable. My wife thought I was nuts when I got them, and I guess this post proves her right. But it was a too good a deal to pass up, and quite honestly, I didn't want to see them end up as scrap. But a year later, I realize that I do not have the time nor skill to get these things back to display-level quality. I'd like to get $20 each, but if you want them all 12 I'd let them go for $200. Pick up only from 44133. Thanks!
