Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Anyone keeping notes on what stores discount their prices when?

Recommended Posts

I think it might be a good idea to keep track of who has lightsdiscounted at certain rates andwhen the discount increases. That way next year we all can look back and try to gauge when we should buy. Has anyone done this yet?

The information seems to come out every year. I don't know if anyone officially keeps notes. I usually remember for the most part. Target and walmart are usually the first ones to goto 75% off. Hobby Lobby goes by smaller increments. If I remember correctly it goes down on a weekly basis to50, 66, 80, and finally 90%. There will be SLIM pickins there this year since nearly all of their mini lights were recalled. Kmart has also used a similar schedule the last 2 years.

They have the same MO each year. Most of us who have been doing this a while know the routine now and just pretty much take it for granted. FYI Hd will go 75% off on the first.

It seems to be changing. In the past, for example, Menards went to 50% off the week before Christmas. This year, they went to 30% off the first week of December! By the time they hit 50% off, things were mightly picked over.

I've seen very few mini's around this week, and in the past, I'd pick them up by the case. Fortunately I don't really need any -- I've got plenty stockpiled from previous years.

Robin,

Our HD in Palm Bay, FL is already 75% off as of the afternoon of 12/31. I don't know when they went 75% off, just went there today. TON of net lights. I am happy because I added another set of color minis to my collection..... gold. Got 2500. That with the 4800 purple I picked up should make a very interesting spinning mini mega tree (along with my red//white mega treeand possibly another spinning mini mega tree that is red white and blue.....now if I could just find some damn green minis.....anybody in FL have unused green minis they'd like to trade for some reds?? :D).... No LEDs, good amount of clear minis.

FYI, our WalMarts out here on the Atlantic coast have a ton of clear and multicolor minis at 75% off all their lights too. The one in Palm Bay had a ton of blue icicle lights, even afterI raided them for 15-20 boxes. Got 2000 blue minis and 4300 red minis from the one store. I bet the one store (Viera) had damn near 400 boxes of clear minis on hand....

HD in Orlando went to 75% off by today. Funny thing is that Target is still at 50% I found some minis I wanted and asked the manager, but no dealing. They couldn't even tell me when they were going to go to 75% off! They mainly had icicle lights, must have been close to 500 boxes of them.

I needed some net lights this year and bought at 50% off. I wish they had some at 75% off up in this area. So far, I haven't seen any minis at 75% off other than some of the aforementioned purple and gold. No other solids or clears.

I actually don't remember seeing many green minis much of anywhere this season....

Our Target is at 50%, I will check tomorrow I guess.

Any chance that WalMart will have to go to 90% with all these lights they have left out here? If they do, I will gladly go and buy a couple 10,000 more of the clear minis at $0.20 a box..... can't pass that up.....
