Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Are there any Oregon Planet Christmas folks hanging out here? Most everybody is probably checking in with the Washington forum since it was the seat of the Northwest Mini PLUS. The NW Mini PlUS was a great event with great people. See y'all soon

Darin,

I'm here in Albany. One of these day me and the wife will make it to the mini. It's all about getting away without the kids for the weekend.

I also need to get out and check out some of the local displays in the area.

Hi Darin

I'm here in Eagle Point, Oregon it's about 7 miles south of Medford.

Everybody's talking about the mini, Wirecat shot me a email a few months ago, but I haven't heard any thing else on It.

Good to hear from you all. Talk to you soon.

Hey Paul,

Yes, i was at the Mini. I was helping Kevin run the camera. Weren't you the one with your wife saying she supported the habit or something like that? Thanks for the compliment on the RC plane. I fly an RC demo at the Hillsboro Air Show each year. RC has been my other sickness and the Christmas lights have provided a nice diversion.

Keep in touch and I'll see if I can swing by to check out your display in Dec.

I also wanted to thank the other Oregon folks for checking in. It sounds like we have the whole I-5 corridor covered from Portland to Medford.

Darrin,

I remember you now. I think you said you were from Portland not Forest Grove. Sorry I didn't get to talk to you at the mini. Since the mini went into overtime it pushed us out the door and didn't have time to chat with more people at the end. Looks like you just joined this year. Are you doing an animated display with LOR? Last year was my first year with AL and I think it turned out great. Especially with the Virtual Santa like I mentioned at the Miini.

So I've got a little park flyer that I bought and have been waiting to get some nice weather to try it out in. You must be pretty good if you are in the Air Show each year. Love to see you fly sometime.

I'm up in the Columbia River Gorge (Stevenson, Carson. Wa.) right across the river from Cascade Locks.

Does that count :D

Hey Travis,

Great to hear from you. Yes, all of our southern WA state brethren certainly count. You are close to the hydroelectric dam (Bonneville, I think) so you should get a 5000 amp service for a huge Christmas display:)

Hi Darin,

Yes I'm actually 10 minutes from the Bonneville Dam.

Yeah if I could tap in directly to the dam I would have all the service power a light fanatic dreams of :D

Hey, I'm here! Looks like I'm a little late on this thread (just like everything else lately). We had our first child 4 months ago now and I have been no where near my computer. I almost thought I was lost when I logged onto PC tonight! What have I missed? I heard the mini was pretty good...will have to try to make it next time.

Fitz,

First off congratulations on the new baby. Hope the nights are not too sleepless. I was kind of hoping to see you at the mini, too bad you couldn't make it. Had a great time and learned alot. I guess with the new baby you'll be starting decorating early this year. :)

Thanks Paul! The nights are getting easier as he gets a little older, those first two months were tough! I was really trying to get to the mini but my son was only 8 weeks old and I couldn't swing it. And I will definitely be starting earlier this year because I won't have the long hours of free time anymore!

Not in Oregon but pretty close. Same town as Papa-LF. In fact same family as Papa-LF. Its all my fault that he is addicted to twinkiling little lights, haha.

I have been out and away for PC for a spill but back and glad to see more Oregonians and Wa****onians around here. We gotta make sure all that Columbia River hydro powere stays here in the Northwest. Sorry all you Cali's that want to buy our power.

Greeting,

I am new to the PC forum but, have been watching it for quite a while.

I am looking to meet up with those in the NW to get first hand feed back on our new lighting controller, LiteDriver.

Thank you,

Welcome Ken, the litedriver reminds me of the Radio Shack color organ I made as a kid. I still have it and I think that it planted the seed for my display today. Use to spend hours as a kid listening to my albums and watching the colored lights go to the music. Came across this 20 channel color organ a while back and it just blows me away. Think this would look awsome in the middle of a wreath.
