Are we on track?

Recommended Posts

Hello to Oregonians, Is everybody on track for completion? or are you behind like me? It seems a little over whleming right now I still have 8 arches (ran out of lights, so i have to wait till they come out for the season). I have most of my programing done, so that a bonus. Well back to work. Dave

I finished my "tune" to sign today and worked on my mega tree. These cold temps this weekend make it feel like it's getting close!! I added a few more songs to the list, so the only reason I'm behind is that I keep adding MORE!

Dave,

Sending you am PM on a listing on craigslist. They don't want to part it out, but if there's anything you would want in this listing I have talked them down in the price.

I'm never really ready to go until November 1st...My garage will be packed full of lights come mid-October when it is cool enough to get in above the garage! Since I'm not an LOR user YET, I don't have that added stress. I've managed to go 5 years without! I am interested to see what new things will be out this year in Coscto, Lowe's and HD.

By the way...Craigslist finds have been bountiful the past few weeks!

AHHHHH !! I'm not anywhere near ready. This is my first year and I have 6 LOR controllers (96 channels) purchased over 8 months. I was going to start out with one 16 channel board, but something must have happened. 3 controllers still need hookup and enclosure mounting. I have a number of arches to build and I need to figure out what goes where, build a temp power panel and communication cables to reach the controllers. I have 7 of my 12 mini-trees strung. The Mega tree is pretty much ready so that's not an issue. I see some vacation days in my near future.

Well I think I'm getting there. At least I think I'm better off than Darin :D. But then again it could all change on me. I've seem to have gotten some momentum going right now so I just have to keep it up. Basically just coming down to doing some final programming on some songs and hoping that I don't think of something else that is cool that I want to add to my show.

Wow, I am really behind this year. I got to get more lights ASAP to finish 9 mini trees. While I wait I am working on the electrical extensions and all the infrastructure I need around the house. Unfortunately I suffer from myasthenia Gravis ( a disease similar to MS) and that really puts me behind most of the time. I try to work the whole year but when the weather gets hot, my MG slows me down. During spring and summer I can't work on anything that require any physical activity beyond walking a few hundred feet. That's when I work on my sequencing.

When the weather gets cold however, I begin feeling almost normal again.

I am glad I feel better during winter because my wife hates the show so she gives me a hard time about the whole year. No help from her and my kids are too young.

Hey, When are you guys planning to start an area club or something?

Let me know, I am willing to travel

Alex

PS Nice to meet you all.

Glad to hear your feeling better, I hope all goes well with your display, I'm sure you will have it up and running on time. they do have a mini plus gathering some time in the spring or early summer I believe in portland or washington area. Keep your eye on the forums in the spring. Good to hear from you. Dave :):):):):):)

Thanks for the good wishes. I decided this year to copy most of the Richard Holdman's look. My house looks very similar to his son I am going to create my own version or Richard's house. He doesn't seem to mind so I guess it is okay. I'll do a merge of his songs and mine and I'll get my neighborhood all happy despite the economic news.

Hey, I created a huge Faberge Egg made out of clear plastic cups. it has more than 3 hundred cups and it looks real neat. I also created huge lighted balls that are real beautiful. I can't believe all the cool stuff I am building with my hot glue gun and plastic cups.

I'll try to post pictures soon. (However, some A-hole stole my 2 thousand dollar camera when I lend it to my wife when she went to Ashland on a trip)

I hope you guys are having better luck.

Take care.

Alex

Hey Alex,

Where did you get the idea for the plastic cup artwork? That's really fascinating. Do you have any pictures during different stages of construction and how the lights fit inside?

It's a cool idea. The cups near the top may hold water when placed outside :)

It was not my idea. I found a website with the whole thing. I sort of lost the site address but I'll check my backups for it. The cubs hold water and ice so in order to stop that I burn 4 or 5 holes around the base and on the sides. This allows water to pass through all the way down.

There are different ways to place the lights. You either make 3 or 4 holes (depending how many colors you are planning to use) I use 3 holes (clear, green and red and sometimes blue) to place my lights.

This is very hard to explain without pictures or drawings so I'll get them and post the data tomorrow.

When I was building my prototypes I tried different ways, cup sizes, light position,etc...

I got to say, most of them look real stunning at night. The people from the website build them with just one color, however I love to see them changing colors. Using 3 colors is okay, however the 4 color one I build was a pain to complete.

Anyway, I'll get more pictures or the official website by tomorrow.

I got plenty of other crazy projects to share so... stay tuned.

Alex,

Those are really cool. Thanks for the link! Where is the best place to get a good buy on the clear plastic cups, or does it really matter? I'm sure there is more cost in the hot glue and lights than there are in the actual plastic. I don't have enough time to make any this year, but I will certainly try to get a fleet of sparkleballs put together for next year. Keep us posted on how they survive the weather.

I am probably not supposed to do this but I thought I would give the locals first dibs on lights. I have come into about 40 boxes of white target 100cnt on green wire and I have 43 walmart 100cnt multi color lights on green wire plus 7 boxes of 100cnt multi on white wire. I paid a dollar a box so that what I am asking. Shoot me a pm if interested. Thanks Brandon

I was thinking about doing the same, but,,, it's my last weekend for hunting season. Besides that, I'm waiting for my lawn to go dormant! I'm sick of mowing this year!! I would hate to add some obstacles to the lawn only to further my frustration:)

I've got my Halloween stuff out now so it gives me a reason to have the boxes out without looking too anxious. I'll be taking the Halloween stuff down this weekend. I do have all my boxes out with some of the Christmas cords plugged in. I'm trying to be a little stealthy with the Christmas stuff. Things like my netlights can go pretty much undetected. I'll probably start really laying the stuff out the week before Thanksgiving.

I just got my power "station" finished. Wow, was this a lot of work ! I had to build the self supporting stand and everything (conduit, weatherproof outlets). The blank GFCIs feed the 12 awg cables stuffed in conduit and strung throughout the property. I'm dreading the day I have to take it down.

I'm way behind, it seems.

I have the electrical part partly done, but still need a couple more hours to get that part done. I've had great help from members, neighbors and expecially from my Dad. I could never have done the big items without his help. THe 8' star and giant half-megas will be spectacular, I hope.

Had to re-balance power, added in a #6 controller (96ch) and changed my configs to reflect the changes made. Seemed to save on cord a lot and spread the load out real nicely. But now every sequence needs the new config applied to it.

Overall, I'm in good share sequencing and voiceover wise. I have probably too many songs ... so I may have different combos on different nights.

Really worried about crowds, traffic ... so I'm going to be monitoring that closely. Target date is still 12/1 ... perhaps some testing nights before then ... but no way ready much earlier.

The projects my Dad is helping me with should get going full speed by this Sunday ... sandbags staged up to the roof, roof access platform being installed, rooftop star being brought over and possibly staged. My Dad and I will be test fitting the two 22' half-megas and probably working on the ground connections for that. The donation box is coming along (but I haven't seen it yet) and the tune-to sign is still in progress.

I'm having extension cord worries ... but think I'll have enough now that I spread the load out so well with the 6 controllers (1 being rooftop). Found that I could support it all with only adding four new 20A circuits total. Already had four 15A dedicateds to start with.

I have received materials from my charity and need to figure out how to put up those banners in a way where they won't blow away. Thinking about "recycling" a political sign after the elections to mount the charity banner onto. Seems like a lot of good signs will be trashed soon.

Still stressed about getting the windows framed out. The wind-o-lights frames are rather flimsy outdoors and in big windows. Need to find a good way to hang them and decide on the bulbs to use in them still. Wanted LED windows, but didn't end up with a single unified color since I bought everything at after-christmas sales. Wondering if I should buy a single color or just wing it with a mismatch of stuff (in the windows).

Then still need to assemble 6 controllers (simple PC version kits) and channel-assign and test them.

So wouldn't you know my best friend decided to get married this weekend, so even this weekend, only 1 day of work will get done. So its going to be really intense from here on out. I have warned my wife, I'm going into high gear soon to get ready because I literally have to.

Darin,

Looking good. Haven't made my power box. Still working on other things. Halloween party last Saturday took a few days from me. Was going to string up lights on the house the last couple of days but came down with a cold and plus my clips didn't show up until Tuesday. Still waiting for the roofer to come out and put two roof anchors in for me.

Wow, you guys are working very hard this year. I decided this year to reproduce Richard Holdman's old display. What a headache. However, I think it will be worth it. I completed 20 songs already and the voiceovers. I am I need to finish 9 white color trees with clear, red and green lights on each of them. Believe me, finding those lights with white color cable was a nightmare. I got the clear and the red from Walmart at 2.44 a box however, the green (white wire) seems to elude me. I finally had to bite the bullet and order them on the Internet from a company called Christmas Lights etc.. www.christmaslightsetc.com

I ordered 50 they only had 38 available. What a drag. (I paid 7.75 per box-Too much money) I guess I'll start with that and hope for the best. ****, I'll spray paint the remaining strings of green lights if I have too. I Guess I am on track to begin the build up the first week of Nov.

That will keep my mind away from the election coverage. (I am a political junkie)

I decided to also buy a brand new computer just to run the show. Nothing too powerful...just good enough to just do one thing...Run the show. You see every year I tell my family that the computer is running the show and that the audio is being transmitted , but no one listens to me. They play music, games and other programs on top of the LOR. Thanks God I monitor the show most of the time on a portable radio so I catch them most of the time. It just bugs me that they never listen.

We plan to start putting the lights on the house this weekend. I always do those first, want to get them done before it gets to cold and slick up there, plus they are one of the least obvious things for people to notice right now. Starting this weekend I will be staying out late in the evenings to get everything out by turkey day.

That's right, this weekend I am taking care of the very top of my house. Unfortunately Oregon has plans of its own. This weekend we will be getting light rain. We will see.

This is the first time that I use C9s. I am replacing all my minis with C9s. I hope it looks good.

I am almost done with some stuff but I am starting to get nervous about the calendar.

Like people say "Que sera... sera!
