Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Am I the only one not finished?

I'm still not done either. My grand plans for this weekend were thwarted by the flu. I feel better now but it seems like too many things have gone the wrong way on the show this year. I need to be way better prepared for next year!

I guess doubling my channels wasn't such a good idea :P

I still have to wrap the Maple tree in the front yard. * channels and 4800 more lights to go!!!!

I'm not done as far as what I had planned on doing, but that's the up side of a static display you can stop or add at anytime without worrying about you animated sequences not looking right.

I have a few hours of work to do and then I'm done. I then have to do my neighbors house and another up the steet from me

I had saved vactaion time just to decorate my house, I was supposed to have 10 days off mid November to do all this, but got screwed at work because one guy got fired and one went to another shift which left two people doing the work of four, hence no vacation time for me.

Woman plans, God laughs..so much for getting that controller hooked up yesterday, raining and rotten weather kept me in. I'll work in a snow storm and zero temps, but I won't mess with setting up electricity in rain. Raining right now too, supposed to turn to blessed snow this afternoon. So I'm bumping my cut off to Friday, maybe even Saturday. Drat, I still have 3 trees to put up inside too.

Carrie, I am only 75% done. I will be done by Friday. I need to be. :)

HEADS UP!

I know y'all don't want to hear this, but starting Friday and through the weekend, most of IL is going to have STEADY 30MPH winds with gusts up to 50MPH. Guy-wire anything that can topple, and add an extra sandbag to the blowmolds!

The "light" winds we had here the past two days were sufficient to rip out the ground anchor I was using on one of two megatrees. Spent today untangling a mess of lights getting it back in service.

We are finaly getting somewhere with our display. First the good

Our new sub panel and 12 15amp circuits is all hooked up. Most of our lights are up and on at this point. It looks great! (imho)

The bad

90% chance that LOR isn't going to happen this year. Just ran myself out of time.

The worst

We are expecting an ice storm of up to 1.25"!!! I guess that will test our new mega tree.

I'm trying to get pictures tonight but my camera is misbehaving.
