Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

First year videos

Recommended Posts

Here are some videos of my first year. 128 channels and about 41000 lights. If I had to do it again, I would have started smaller. But, I got it done, just had to ignore everything else in my life for a while. The responses from the visitors was overwhelming. I would think next year would be easier...... I hope! Merry Christmas!!!

Very nice job.

Your videos are very clean. What kind of camera did you use?

I would also say that maybe I should have started out smaller.

Thanks Steve! It was a Canon HV20 I borrowed from a friend. I just wish my neighbor wouldn't leave his Gemmy light show on all night! In the background, his lights are blinking on and off out of sink with my music. Oh, well, What can you do?!? Ha!!

Your display looks great. Any chance you are friendly enough with the neighbor to get him to turn off for a bit so you can film?

It was the only night I could get the HD Camera and it was late. I didn't want to wake them. They have real young ones. I have some standard def. vids without his lights on though. It was so funny, after he saw the show and my neighbor accross the street saw it, they went out and bought the Gemmy things the very next day. I spent all this money to have the FM transmitter so I wouldn't bother the neighbors with the music and they blare that single speaker the whole time their lights are on. One onlooker asked me if his radio was too loud and I told him no it was fine. He had to turn it up so he could hear over the Gemmy speaker. He volunteered to short out my neighbors speaker. I laughed and told him "no, that's ok". I'm trying to convince them both to do our diplays together next year. I'll do all the sequencing, you guys provide the electricity! Ha! We'll see.

Rich,

Watched your videos again. I like We Three Kings. Somehow we missed it the night we went visit. Good Job!

Scott, as Rich questioned, where are you located. We have enough people in the Jax area to have at least a get together later in the year.

Thanks Tony

Of the 5 I sequenced 'The little Drummer Boy' was the most popular, but my favorite was 'We Three Kings'. When that 'wave' went off on the first beat, it got your attention if you had the radio up! Ha!

The 'get together' idea is a must. I think we are going to have a few more new people next year. It might be cool to help. I know I needed it for my first season.

We live in Oak Leaf off Argyle Forest Blvd behind the Publix grocery store.

I have some video but no Web site yet and it doesn't look as good as both of yours :(
