Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Well Steve, it's kind of like Jello at this point. There's still room for one more. That is the Jello commercial isn't it, or close to it? Anyway, welcome. And make sure you complete the two polls going on on this forum to let us know what topics you want to hear about at the Mini.

Stay tuned for more information next week.

And Gail, we will be glad to have you , and possibly your spouse, here from Inneus, MO. You've probably seen the other posts on this thread about completing the two polls that are open until the end of the month, which gives those attending the opportunity to voice their opinion about the items we should discuss. So if you haven't, head to those two polls now and vote.

Lyman, that is great. We expect to have more information about the HAM this coming week. Just tying up some open issues before we make the announcement. And to make your trip north beneficial, make sure you complete the two polls about your agenda item wish list. Look forward to meeting you.

For those planning on coming to HAMPlus who have not cast a vote on the two polls about possible topics to discuss, the polls close down next Tuesday, June 30. So make your voice heard before they do.

Here is an update to the Roll Call. Two that were in the Maybe category have signed up at the HAM-PLUS website to attend, and one found out that he couldn't get the day off. So here's how things stand right now:

Some of you who said yes, you know who you are, but haven't officially "registered" at the HAM-PLUS website still have a couple more weeks. And for those on the fence, we still have some openings, so we'd love to have your participation.

I'm embarrassed to say that I omitted our special guests, Walter and Jackie Monkhouse, from our Roll Call. :( Jackie and Walter have agreed to travel to KC all the way from their home in LA (not Los Angeles) to be a big part of our HAM-PLUS, by talking about Poleology and demonstrating their cutting edge JUMP. They were a big hit at LUO, so if you are still on the fence about attending the HAM-PLUS, this should definitely sway you to the Yes column.

Tyson has put together a map that shows the locations of our Red Cup Social and HAM-PLUS, as well as nearby hotels and Christmas related stores in the KC area. There are a couple of links to this map on the HAM-PLUS website. The goal is to assist those staying overnight in KC in making hotel reservations.

This is my first time at setting up an animated display and I'm trying to figure the best place to start. Seems when I layout the yard, I then have to figure out the controllers, change the yard layout, then account for amps, change the controllers, change the yard... Anybody going to be at the KS mini that might want to sit down and take a look at where I am in my planning?

Your experience isn't unlike what I go through each year. Except I set up the yard layout first and keep it that way, working through the other issues from there. Bring all of your information with you and we'll see what we can work out.

We can help. Like Tim said, bring your plans and we'll figure it out.

Time is ticking down. One week to re-PLUS and two weeks until HAM-PLUS. We still have room for you to sign up at our website, www.hamplus.webs.com. And there are 5 of you, you know who you are, who said they would be attending, but have not "officially" registered at the HAM-PLUS website.

For you who have registered, the Door Prizes have started to come in. You can find out what's going to be given away at the HAM-PLUS website. This isn't the final list, because we are expecting more of your favorite vendors to contribute to the day. Check back for updates. We've also tweaked the agenda. Plenty to learn for all.

This will be a great event in the Heart of America. Thanks to all who have registered.

ok, i have brought back 2 nice door prizes from valerie from suprtec novelties/ christmas-leds.com make sure you have a vehicle big enough to put them in, like a pickup truck or large van, also it would be advisable if there is no van or truck you own, bring lots of straps for the top of the car... to strap them down.... all i can say is that it would be ironic if i won the door prize for the items i brought back from the re-plus, but at any rate i have themhere at my house and they are in good working order, thanks again to valerie for such a great donation for the door prizes for the ham mini see ya late friday night or early sat morning..

Looking forward to meeting those that can make it to the Red Cup Social on Friday night, and everyone in Lenexa next Saturday.

I wish this wasn't so soon after rePLUS. Two weekends in a row is hard to do.
