jpohio 0
I'm so far behind the curve... by the time I try to implement "new" ideas from others, they are old hat :giggle:
hob 10
And here I thought my idea of using artificial trees outside was original. Next thing ya know someone's going to tell me using candy canes, garland and lights to make a fence has already been done before too. LOL
Guest Matilda
I'm staying out of this one... LOL (except to say that if I couldn't 'borrow' ideas... I wouldn't have much of a display! ) Edited January 2, 2010 by Matilda
razlfratz 8
I don't see it as copying, if I didn't want my ideas used and or improved upon, I would not post pictures. I too have seen ideas I want to use and tweak for my own. I have also seen ideas that I have used in the past. For example, Hob's using artificial christmas trees outside--I did that until the tree needed thrown away. Now I have more Ideas for using artificial trees that I find for coming years. I also have an idea for the carosel of blow molds I am going to work on for next year. By the time I post pictures, I have had my moment of glory because everyones display is usually built. I like this site because it sparks more and more creative ideas for me and every other member. Isn't the true purpose of life to help each other and inspire each other anyway? Oh well that's my 2 cents worth. Happy New Year Everyone!! Sharon I have a blow mold carousel, I would sure like to see yours when it is done. I got the idea for mine from a PC member, sorry don't remember his name.
Jim_Texas 0
Dang it ! I was going to post a thread about stealing ideas! You stole my idea! ~Jim~
AnitanotherOutlet 10
I think if you asked others here to not they probably wouldn't.

Joel 0
Please. I don't mind someone using my idea. But I really wish they wouldn't steal part of my display. Kathy and I have been decorating for the holidays at our grandson's school for the last 2 years and a 6 ft plywood snowman is now MIA. Guess it was going to happen sooner or later. Just glad it was not all our pieces. Hoping the principal at the school may have put it inside for safe keeping. Edited January 3, 2010 by Joel clarity

Toymakr000 1
I have another take on this... I have one certain display item that I use at Halloween.. It could be dangerous if not in the right hands... I have not been "free"with the information on how to build it for fear of someone hurting themselves...

hob 10
I've never seen your Halloween display Toymakr000 but I can appreciate where your coming from. I've heard of folks replacing air hoses with PVC pipe. Then shower themselves with shrapnel. Like one great comedian said, "You can't fix stupid." LOL I admit I look at everyone's displays with the intent on getting ideas.
Tim Bateson 24
...I've heard of folks replacing air hoses with PVC pipe... Actually when done "properly" PVC pipe is often used in-place of air hoses. However, we get your point.
Joseph Ayo 0
I agree totally. I "Stole" the idea of covering the front of my house in lights from Ron Lister, and thank him every year for it. If someone decides to copy you, it must mean you are doing something right!! bob Well and Ron stole is idea from his boss, Mickey Mouse! His display has been inspired by the best in the business, the Osborne Light display at Disneyworld. Its all good, everything, even hanging lights around a window or on a gutter has been a stolen idea. If you dont want your idea borrrowed (much better term then stolen) then dont post a picture and tell how you did it on planetchristmas because everything that gets to this board gets copied. Its a good thing that people copy ideas, or else how do these people come out of no where and put on top notch christmas shows complete with strobe lights and radio stations, etc. Thats what blows people away is so much information on planetchristmas that people come from no where and put on a show as if they had 20 years experience doing it. Brad Caudill 0
Not sure if this has been said since I am not reading 5 pages of posts b ut 1) If you stole an idea nobody would know other than a PC member because your neighbor would not know so and so in Utah did the same thing and 2)there were problems in the past of someone claiming an idea as theirs and posting it before the originator actually got to post it. ChrisL1976 1
)there were problems in the past of someone claiming an idea as theirs and posting it before the originator actually got to post it. If you have a original idea, video tape it with a short clip being of the current days newpaper with your idea so we can verify the date of origin and then crucify the person who is claiming it as there own. cars06 37
I think its hard to figure. I've made tools and thought wow what an idea. just to read specialty mags to see it was made years ago. And had ideas about my display, then watching tons of videos to see someone else has done it.. Just like the "fans" and "poles", they arent new or even recent. Seen similar things in films of Vegas lol If you ever sit and think "HMMM is someone out there thinking exactly what I am right now"?? The short answer is........ YES LOL

ChrisL1976 1
My rationalization is... Great minds think alike and I leave it at that. That is my general thought on stuff as well. There is only so much you can do with strings of lights. Purely original ideas are probably pretty rare, making them into reality is another story. Most like you are not the first to think of it, just "The first person" to do it and post it on the web.
LightsonBeasley 0
In stead of the Newspaper Copyright idea you should just use the "Poor Man's Copyright" Which consists of taking a picture of your new idea putting it in a self addressed envelope with a stamp and mailing it to yourself... The point it will get postmarked at the Post Office and then sent back to you where you will keep the sealed UNOPENED envelope until something arrises where you have to prove you had the first Copyright on a idea. This is a true method and is used by independent film script writers all the time because they have no money to afford a real Copyright!!

I like to think that way too. I noticed a lot of us this year outlined our yards in toy soldiers nothing too original but obviously a lot of us thought it was great!
