Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Christmas at Lowes

Recommended Posts

Our local Lowes has Christmas items out. It is sparse right now, but they had lights, wreaths, and a few inflatables. Happy hunting.

I'm really not sure I like the fact that the stock is on the shelves this early. Just looks like the further progression of the strategy used last year. Out early, pre Christmas markdowns and product gone by Christmas. No big after Christmas windfalls..... Oh Well...

I went to my Lowes today, Christmas was pretty sparse, but employees were hard at work getting everything stocked. I got some strange looks from them as I looked at what they had, and I considered buying a few cases of minis that I need, but decided I didn't need that lying around the house right now. I may have been one of the first looking at their christmas stuff. I'll probably do my large load mid-October.

Just a quick thing that I noticed, their price for mini lights in $2.88 this year for 100 count. That's up.39 from last year. It just surprised me a little to see such a sharp increase.

Shelves almost fully stocked here in North Carolina also!!

The good thing about the early sales is that most people do not yet suspect the 50% off to start so early, so you just have to adjust your schedule a bit. I went to a Lowes last season on the night they were putting up the 50% off signs to start the sales the next day, I got some killer deals that first day, Not sure of the exact date, but it was about 2 weeks before Christmas. This date also varied by different stores in different towns!

The dude was a bit rude today when I was snooping around. He asked if he could help and I asked "is this all the lights you'll stock this year?" He replied - how many did you think we'd have? No leftovers this year again. Should be sold out by Thanksgiving.

Would be nice with all the early Christmas inventory if GE comes out with the LED coupons again. $3.00 off was a great deal!

I know last year at both Lowes and Home Depot I was told NOT to expect to be able to use a $3 a string inhouse rebate and a $3 off GE coupon together. One of them pretty much said if they wanted to give the stuff away they would throw them out on a table in the parking lot. It was pretty sweet though getting all those $9.99 strings for $3.99.

You're not supposed to start off by asking when they'll be going on clearance.:P

I'm sure the employee feared for his life seeing Dano snooping around the store, his pockets were probably buldging

I don't think they appreciated me looking around their christmas section either. No one approached me, but I got looks from employees. I don't get it, I understand that most people aren't shopping for christmas lights this early, but if they don't want people shopping for it, it shouldn't be for sale in September.

Went to Lowes today to look at heaters for my daughter, she just moved into a house with no heat, so i thought i would get a head start on finding a heater, ended up buy 2 heaters, 16 boxes of red minis, 16 boxes of blue minis, and 16 boxes of green minis. The cashier said i was the first to buy Christmas lights, They don't have alot out, hope they have more coming, or in container boxes outside..

I even saw a few boxes sitting on a cart this had big stickers on them that read" BLACK FRIDAY 2010- DO NOT OPEN UNTIL THE MORNING OF NOV 26TH" and under that the box had a printed label on it that said "50ct LED Home light set" hmmmm.....

I stopped by my closest Target (smallest of two) and it looked like they had all of their light strings out. Mostly LED (they appeared to be full wave this year) and some incandescent (no gold).

Halloween was still setup right next to it (where the Christmas wire-frames would be) with a very annoying ghost moaning every ten seconds (boy that would get old quick).

I would hate to work in seasonal every night.... LOL! It would get old.

The 5-6 different Lowes stores in a 30-45 min drive for me are ALL starting to stock and are mostly halfway there with their Christmas Items!! No Black Friday stock, seems a little early for them to have that on the floor, someone will rip into it fast!!
