Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Not feeling it this year

Recommended Posts

While this is my first year into the animated side, had Mr Christmas last year so doesn't count:) and every night as our Halloween display goes on and very little people drive by to see it but those who do say it's great and they love it. Then we had one of the neighbor kids from a family that's a little materilistic say to her daughter, "it's kinda tacky" which her daughter explained that meant things don't all match which the wife took a little hard at first. I just explained though that one number making a comment like that and I'm sure we'll get more about it being over the hill for Christmas means very little. The smiles and fun I see on all the kids as we leave those things you remember growing up too and hopefully great memories to all the neighbor kids. every night we have probably a dozen kids in our yard as the lights come on and they start dancing and having fun and smiling, including the daughter of the mom who said it was tacky:), how this is always the best display by far out weighs the lack of traffic or donations that I haven't started to get yet.

Today I planned to do some work, stayed up too late last night....hope tomorrow to have a second wind so I can get all of my new new rope light hangers up.

Have to program one new song for the year and add in a few different light elements to all of the others. Guess that means I need to set up all the controllers so I can run some tests and make sure everything survived the sit thru the Summer....actually to check that all cords are working and all the light zones still work. I'd rather fix a broken zone by blocking it and moving that string to a different zone now.

Neighbor and I have more help to install this year and plan a different controller location making it easier to run strings to the controller...hope to save a few hours on selected parts of the overall set up.

Can't wait for late afternoon when I can do more of the Christmas stuff I needed to do this weekend...

I did some lights last week/weekend (but still am not really 'feeling it' LOL). Just haven't got to anything this weekend tho. Don't have any specific plan even...at this point its gonna be just a basic outline (so 'just lights' not really a display). As of right now out is the:

Roof grid

Icicle lights along eves

Computer control (i will use something to flash it tho)

FM transmitter/music

LOL things could easily change depending on

Feelings

Available time

Weather

--------------------

There have been times the little thoughts of putting it _all_ on eBay has occurred

Used lights are worth nothing.

Many new/unused lights are already gone.

I might sell some larger/random stuff soon (just locally though).

I am the guy that started this thread. I still just can't get in the mood! I did get the mega 20 ft pole up and all the 4 colors of icle lights up. Trying to get myself started on everything else. Once I get going, it will be ok. getting colder now, so that makes it worse, but atleast it is starting to feel like Christmas and the stores are looking like it, which helps get me into the spirit. I have 48 lor channels, so not near as much as some of you have to deal with.

have a mega tree, 16 minis, 5 arches, icles, a light curtain on the wall, some candy canes, candles and other misc items.

I think i was (am) in the same boat as everyone else here. I have been working on my new JUMP this year, (thanks to mr & mrs monkhouse for all of their help) , finally have it ready to go for lights. got out of bed this morning to do some work (snow on the ground... yeak!!) , but turned on some Christmas tunes on pandora on the ole blackberry, woke the entire house up to Christmas music, and WE ARE ALL REALLY EXCITED NOW!!

Hopefully I can make it last. Some neighbors asked last weekend (during trick or treating) where are the lights? so that helped some too.

So to those of you like me, that may be having a hard time getting motivated, just get out there and DO IT!! People love our displays, so do as much or as little as you can!! Merry Christmas!!

Well this is my 2nd year with this hobby. Be fore I got involved with this I just let my son put up a few decorations, never really got into the out door decorating, just a couple of blow ups then in 2008 while at work we put up our Christmas collection and one of the items was a 3 tree outdoor light set that played music and did a bit with lights and color, that hooked me now in my second year with the LOR I can not get the 3rd unit that I had wanted to really increase my show so instead we changed the set up a bit, instead of 6 lights on our orange tree and 6 more on the side bushes, I created 12 mini trees ( need to finish those). so will be the same music maybe a new song or two, but a new set up.

Just remember the displayes are not really for ourselves but for others and for me to the Glory of Christ. (yes I am selective on 99% of my music)

Keep the faith and Keep Christ in Christmas.

Well,

This is my 2nd year doing a "Tacky Christmas Show"....my wife picked up one of those Mr. Christmas Lights and Sounds boxes at Costco that year.....and I setup a tiny display on the lawn with a few lights on the shrubs and such, and enjoyed it.

Last year, I went a little futher, picking up a few more strings of LED Lights, making a HO HO HO on my lawn, and putting a star on the Gazebo.

I've been thinking all year about a LOR controller, but I think I'm going to run the Mr. Christmas one for another year, and when times are less tough next year (I have a 6 month Persian Gulf deployment coming up) I'll spring for a controller and such to run things.

This year, I've got about 1500 extra lights on top of last year, and I bough a big bag of Brick-Clip's, so I'm moving the show to the windows and eaves of the house. It'll take a bit more setup time, but the weather hasn't settled down on us yet, and I anticipate getting out to start the setup tomorrow.

Do what you can, and enjoy it. It doesn't have to be "bigger and better" every year....it can be "big enough"...

Navy 1st I want to say "Thank You" for serving our country and protecting us. Prayers being sent your way.

I agree we always want bigger, better, and more.. I also only use the Mr Christmas but it sure doesn't put on the same show, but that's OK! The big shows are great but my little attempt is about the spirit and giving of my own heart. I put up many lights last year (what I consider many), may be few to others.

I love the big shows (love to have one) but I don't & the way the economy is & me getting older everyday not sure I ever will.. But thats OK. I give what I have and what I am able to do.

It's so easy to get caught up yearly - wanting bigger and better!

Feel good about doing what you can and God Bless all for each part, small or big that you do.

Each person is special in spreading the Blessing at Christmas!!

Leona,

I'm not 100% sure we're in the same country (unless you live in Canada too!) but your prayers are appreciated.

I got a phone-call from my wife this evening....she was taking the kids over to Nannie's house, and called me to inform me that Nanny already has her Christmas Tree and lights up! Why haven't I started!!!

'Tis the season, and I think tomorrow afternoon, I'm gonna hit the roof. It's supposed to be about 10 degrees out and sunny.

Well.

I have till this weekend to decide myself. If I cannot get started this weekend, no show this year. I've been working too much to makup loss of cash due to my wife being layedoff.

I really want to try but don't like having to do the same thing with no new props for the past three years.

in the end its not always about you, but about the traditions your house may have started and you not even know about ....thats what keeps me going, knowing that someone walking by the display might smile the first time that day...you can do it man!

Definitely some tri-color change minis. Doesn't look like you have enough yard for a mega, so that's out. Some net lights on the shrubs is a quick and cheap improvement. Not this year, but next year might consider adding something to the rooftop, like a big Bethlehem star or the like.

OK, my show will be on this year! My two sons "promised" to help with the setup.

To my surprise, we were out today by 8:30AM to start the build. Weather here was in the high 60's. We actually got alot done today.

I actually started to work two new songs as well. Hope to have the time to do more.

The BUG bit me now I'm in the mood. Just sucks I have no cash to buy anything new this year.

My oldest even asked me if I wanted to borrow some cash, pretty embarrasing.

Hope my wife find's a job soon. Sucks again, I make good money but still can't afford all our expenses without her extra income.

What happened to the old days when the Man of the House was able to support his entire family and the wife was a Home-Maker?

Our economy is really getting out of control and the **** government keeps raising my taxes. Something has got to give!

Flanigan,

This is only day 2 of my setup....the inflatables are still inside, and I've got a whole pile of stuff left to do!

I've gone with almost 100% LED's for my show, and LED Net lights are $35 a pop here-abouts. So, I'm not up with the net-lights yet. I'm thinking on seeing what they cost after Christmas and picking up a few of them then.

Also, I'm only running one of the Light and Sounds of Christmas boxes, so there is only so much I can do with it.

Stuff still on my "do do" list:

1. Garland and lights on the banister

2. HO HO HO on the lawn

3. Inflatables setup

4. Setup the Sound/control box

As a plus, I picked up 7 bags of extension cords at Canadian Tire (walmart equiv) tonight with 4 16 foot extension cords in each bag, at $9.97 a bag....that's $2.50 per cord! SWEET!

Setting up the show has just gotten easier!

Oh,

And since I turned the lights on at about 7-ish tonight, I've had 3 cars do drive-by's to look already!

SUCCESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too funny! I was simply testing lights and cars kept coming by. Just feeds my desire to hurry up and finish. Want to light up by Wed!

Maybe this can feed a little inspiration to those "not feeling it this year". I too was going through the motions and wondering how far I would take it this year. I knew I was in deep when my wife asked me, "What now, you still haven't finished all you already said! You need to finish one thing before you start another." Lol, she's right but I keep coming up with more and more! Anyway, here are pics of my "obsession" over just the past few years. 2010 is shaping up to be even bigger!

For some reason pics are not in order I uploaded them, but they are from 2006-2009; pic one is 2006, pic two is 2009, pic three is 2008, and pic four is 2007.

Funny you should mention drive-bys. I've been using my mega tree star as a work light (about half as bright as a street light). Had one car sit in front of the house for 15 minutes waiting for the show to start the other night. Had to break the bad news to them that the show wouldn't start for another 16 days.

I was feeling it but, now that I have read all these "not feeling it" threads I don't feel it either.

I'm "feeling it" now... smiley-happy119.gif

I picked up another 4 LED strings at Costco today and added them to the roof, so I've got the outline done. Takes me up to about 40 strings so far.

I'm probably going to work up the HO HO HO tonight and my Candy-canes too. We'll see where I end up....it's dark already, and I'm not sure how cold I really want to let myself get...

Add one of these to your roof-line....

I did! (Pics to follow tomorrow!)

That picture was posted a year or two ago. The homeowner relayed that a woman passing by called 911, thinking it was real. Neither she, nor the responders were very happy with the homeowner that set that up, so you may want to reconsider...
