spt-2 vs. spt-1 vampire clips?

Recommended Posts

I just received 100 clips from Novelty lights...I ordered the SPT-2 versions (10 amp)...what I am trying to determine is whether SPT-2 clips are designed for 18 or 16 gauge spt-2 wire...I read that you can not use them with spt-1 as the tooth will go through the entire cable...any help is appreciated....trying to finish up the display and I need to solve this...thanks

I think it's always best to order the plugs and the wire at the same time from the same vendor to be sure they work together. Without seeing what you have, I would suggest you make a short "test" cable and see if it works.

I've been able to jam some pretty heavy zip line into CDI's vampire plugs using a pair of pliers to crimp the wire in the slot.

And I don't think the teeth going all the way through the wire will post a hazard. (But I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.)

sounds like you're saying I could use the 16/2 spt-2 wire with the spt-2 clips if I can't find 18 gauge spt-2...at the same time I could probably use them with 18 gauge spt-1? I think the test cable is the way to go...

your right...next time I buy cable and clips together!

This has been a learning experience and I just don't want to cause any electrical issues...

Iv'e wondered the same thing about the SPT-2 plugs. I've only used 16 gauge SPT-2 and always found it really hard to get it to fit, sometimes the slide-on back even breaks. But, in my case I was using store bought rolls of wire that may have had even more insulation than the cheaper stuff you can buy in 500 and 1,000 foot rolls. Conversly I wondered if maybe those vampire plugs were just designed for 18 ga and not 16...

I've never bought my wire and plugs from the same source, heck I have spt-1 from like 6 different sources and all different brands and those plugs I've never had an issue with. Ok, that's a bit of a lie, as I have problems with the clear jacketed spt-1, it's a lot stiffer and the vampire teeth have a tough time poking through it and making contact. It's actual lamp cord, not speaker wire... I only had a spool of it and it was used up quickly.
