Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Interesting Things People Have Said About Your Display

Recommended Posts

I was really happy to receive a nice email from a great lady I used to work with. Here it is below, although I changed the names just for the heck of it. It really made my day!

Kenny,

[Husband] and I brought the kids by your house Friday night to see the light

show and everyone was impressed. Well done!! We do an advent box during

December and have different activities until Christmas. Friday was "look

at Christmas lights". My "turns 13 Monday" daughter opened the door for

Friday and said "yeah, we do that every year". We told her this year

would be different. .....and we were right.

I thought you might like to know some of the reactions.

[Daughter1] (almost 13) said that is the best ever and wanted to know how you

did it all. [Daughter2] (10) would have stayed there all night and thought it

was very cool. (she also wanted to come inside but everyone had on PJs

so we said we may do that another time). [Daughter3] (7) said she thought it

was better than Disney World. [Daughter4] (3) stood up and clapped during the

Josh Groban song. When the Chipmunk song came on, the whole van erupted

and screamed "Turn it up".

I thought you had a perfect amount of songs and the variety was great.

I think we are going to try to bring my parents by to see it. My dad and

I really like that kind of thing.

Thanks for sharing with everyone and I hope you guys have a very Merry

Christmas. We miss you here.

LOL.....Quoting the Christmas Vacation Dub-Over.....

"I Dunno....They said its like Italian Imported Christmas Lights...Whatever That Means!"

"The Radio?... Their House is Famous for Christmas Lights?"

"They Sync'ed it somehow to That Radio Station"

"That Radio Station only comes in here!...Like ..we didnt get it across the Street!"

Very interesting thread.

Someone came to my display and thought that I only had to put any music and my Snowman would sing it... (they have no clue of the work it means...)

Now that was great! Don't you wish that your display kept going (or maybe it did), because the commentary was just starting to show their "brilliance"?

I love it when people have absolutely no clue how light shows work and they think the electric bill is outrageous. Of course, before I knew a bunch about animated displays, I thought it was done using those blinker bulbs that you get with lights, oh I was so clueless.

I have a family of "regulars" that come by each year to see the show. Was outside tweaking a few lights when they drove up to talk a bit. This year was their newborn son's first year. While only about 8-10mos old, he told me exactly what he thought without saying a word. The kid's eyes were as big as saucers with wonderment and his mouth was hanging open.

Best endorsement I'll ever get!

my neighbor came over and said they had to buy a new refridgerator because my lights blinking on and off somehow messed with her electricity and burned it up. lol

I was out handing out candy canes and 1 gal with her young daughter told me she need to get her mood improved because she lost her wallet that day so they came to look at the lights.

She told me she felt better about the day and gave me $5 donation to the charity I am collecting for. I told her she didn't have to make a donation but she insisted.

I am just happy I could do something to help her out, and make her a little bit happier.

And here I was thinking about not doing a display next year, guess I need to get busy and start planning next year's display.

When I set up my display, I usually just plug everything in and run static till I get the LOR connected up. Well, me being the single guy, owning my own home and all. I guess it would be the single mom (wow) in the yellow Mustang that stopped by while I was wiring the 100amp exterior sub panel outside.

She asked, "when will you have the music going? Me and my daughter love to watch it. But, just having all the lights on is boring."

and I have 31,100 lights... Clearly the biggest display in Leechburg, PA haha. Boring, oh well ;)

I'm just going to post the link for this one.....

The 'Viewers' Language is rather Harsh! So I'm not going to imbed it but instead add a *Strong Language Warning*

But at 0:58 when the all knowing listener says "Oh yeah...Good Tune Too!...This is the ~Trans-********-Orchestra~"

I Almost spit my soda onto my Keyboard! :D:D:D

Should have listened to the warning and turned my volume down. lol It sounds like he's serious when he talks about the TSO too! I can't believe some people.

We had a guy come by to see the lights and when he heard we had our own radio station in the house to broacast the music, he asked for a job at our radio station.

A child asked, "Am I dreaming?"

One person that came to see the display thought it must have been really expensive to rent out an entire radio station to use with the show.

We received a note during our first animated year that our lights were going to cause seizures…

One of my friends told me he had never been more glad he wasn't epileptic (probably spelled it wrong) than after seeing my first test of the strobes. I can't say I disagree!

I received a much belated check in yesterday's mail for my charity with a note from a women who said her daughter asked to go see the lights again. When she asked her daughter why, her daughter said "Because I think that's what heaven must look like."

There is this house near where I live and every Christmas I always slow down, roll down my window, and listen really hard just to see if the lights are synchronized...they're not :P...just flashing randomly....No music even.

Frankly, I think audiences are fairly smart (but there are always exceptions). If someone thinks the lights are broken you either:

1) Are using a cheap Walmart system :)

2) Have failed as a programmer :P

My favorite questions involve layering. People can't figure out how I make the colors change from red to green :).

My absolute favorite involved Galaxia...cause those ARE special lights :). A kid once asked me if I could make fireworks happen, so I went inside and waited for "Fantasmic" to play (which had fireworks in the Galaxia display) and then came back out. It was pretty magical.

My favorites usually involve the "radio staion". People have no clue how this is done and even if I explain it in detail, it still does not register. The other day I had someone ask me "How did you build an entire radio station in your house? Wasn't that really expensive?"

I get people asking me how I know what song is going to be on the radio next. Even after I try to explain that it's my computer playing the songs and broadcasting, they want to know how I made a deal with the radio station to play my music.

(Then I start telling them about the monkeys with headphones flipping the light switches)
