Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

WOW Tom much more than I imagined. You outdid yourself this year. proposetoast.gif

The houses are amazing.I would of never thought to dress them up like that.

LOVE LOVE LOVE the tree with the train. You have it decorated perfect!!!

Your fawns are so pretty.

The bible scene is also beautiful.

All the snow makes it look so much more christmasy!

I keep telling you I need to adopt you.Come on you know you want to come down da bayou!!! Don't forget the molds though party0049.gif

Thank you so much. I have been wanting to do train track for so long but a hunk of straight track going nowhere in the middle of the yard wasen't working for me, I tend to overthink things. Then there are those houses I can never figure out what to do with, it just came to me one day, figure out how to do a curved track and an instant scene. It is my favorite addition this year. I used that scene for my Christmas card this year.

I really wanted to 'Christmas up' the houses a lot of the detail is hard to be seen from the road but I can't stop myself, I wanted to have 3 this year but ran out of time, but there's always next year! The bible was my very last project, finished that about 2 am night before Thanksgiving, I almost didn't make it but once I decide something LOL Needless to say I was very tired end of November begining of December but walking through it, talking to people, the constant honking of horns, it's all worth it. I love Christmas lights and of course my fawns! I should have waited for a calmer warmer night but the snow was not too deep tonight. I would love to come to your house, you me my molds your molds we would have way too much fun!

Thanks so much, my favorite additions this year also. I am very lucky to have a great neighbor with the extra space, we each have 100 feet of frontage so I have 200 feet to 'play' with!

you know matt my friend buddy pal theirs really no right word that i can think of to describe it but I LOVE IT! you hit so many neat points that i didn't even't think of after my own display i'd say yours is number 1! i love the gingerbread house and the train around the tree scene....... plus i love the way you used all the new things we traded for i told you that star would be perfect and the flatback carolers......awesome awesome awesome.....thank you for sharing all of this if get more pictures by all means post it! we might have to find a time to drive out and soak it all in inperson!

Well thanks so much, can't wait to see yours! We sure traded a lot of stuff over this past year! That star could not have worked better! And those carolers sprayed up great. Those houses are so much fun to convert, The gingerbread one is my favorite too. I was looking at that scene with the flatback carolers the other day not realizing the entire group was from you with the lamp posts from last year. You have your own corner in my display LOL

Ok here are a few more, hated to bore everyone. I took these before I was done nextdoor. Here are some closeer views of the peppermint sticks and gum drops I was telling you about. Never did get a chance to send them. I guess I should explain, I wanted some peppermints to complete my candy theme, so I chopped off the sticks of the lollies, then not wanting to waste the rest, I looked at the stick and thought peppermint stick and gumdrops, absolutely no waste! And my own custom blowmolds and then I wrapped them in the plastic wrap.

I really love your display. It is very much a winter wonderland that I could see my self visiting daily if I lived by you. Your sense of detail is wonderful and I love the anger bear conversions you created. You have some great peices in your display.

Thank you so much. I have always been a detail person, it's a good thing and a bad thing, slows me down, but I have so much fun with it. I was going to put the Angel bears back with the other bears but I thought they deserved the porch this year. I am pleased with them. I have people coming from other states bringing grandkids and family members to see it. I never imagined that, you really talk to some great people. Thanks so much for your kind words and Merry Christmas!

Yeah I think the curved track looks much better.

Even if you can't see the houses very good at the road doesn't matter.I'm sure lots of people are awed by them.I know I am.

Yep we could party on with the molds.I know my grandkids would have a blast too.

Wow very nice! love it! inside and out sounds like you live on a busy street I am sure you get a lot of traffic . Great job!!

Thanks so much, yes it's a busy street I am at the top of the hill that leads into the Township, everybody knows the house. I usually have people pulled off the road but it was so cold tonight. So far have had two very close calls, people tend to just stop dead in their tracks and that is a big no no on this road!

I enjoyed the walk around the yard, it was magical. You

can tell that you put a lot of work and thought into your

display.

Thanks so much, I really did work on it this year, last few years I had slacked off. People often tell me oh it must be so much work. I guess it is, but funny thing is to me it dosen't feel like work, I love every minute of it, it is somehow relaxing and then when it's all lit up, I guess you said it best, magical. Thanks for visiting!

Tom, you outdid yourself this year. It is beautiful..I love the tree with the train. Your theme, Believe, excellent choice..I love it as I did it two years ago although differently from what you did. I used Snap n GLows for my BELIEVE Sign and they worked out great. Did you make the wirefame?

It's funny, I have Believe (Josh Groban), When Christmas Comes to Town and Spirit of Christmas (Polar Express) sequenced this year..great minds, aye?

Your display is truly gorgeous..beautifully done!

Thanks Carrie, a lot of work went into it this year, I am always nervous when I add new things and change, sometimes it dosen't always come out the way I want, but this year I was vey happy with it.

Yes I made it. I make all my accessories. The BELIVE is plywood, I cut out then reinforced on the back, painted white and just zip tied the rope lights to it, those are nice to work with. I have heard of those snap and glow things but never had them they sound nice.

Too funny on the music, It is a great choice for a Christmas display, perfect message for Christmas and he is so talented, I never really cared for the Polar Express, but really like the music from it.

Thanks so much, never too late! The candy side got moved around a lot until I had them exactly where I wanted them. I spend a lot of time trying to fit a lot of molds without it looking like their on top of each other. I have been told I decorate like I landscape, I guess that's a good thing. LOL

How did you make the train tracks?

Sorry I missed this Jacob, I used landscape timbers for the ties and cut a notch in the top. The rails are luan, which is used for subfloor, (very thin plywood) I just cut them into 4 inch strips painted them with Krylon silver fit into the notch in the tie and carefully formed the oval shape, it was really very simple. There is a screw here and there to keep them from moving.

Thanks so much Justin, I had so much fun creating the display. I wanted a more whimsical look to it, tried to think outside the box a little bit. I am to the point I have the molds I want, so it's time to start bringing them to life with new themes and accessories. I hope I have inspired you and can't wait to see your spin on on things next year. You always do a great display.

I have no ideas for next Christmas and can't bear to think about it yet. I am seriously thinking of the whole white lights and wreaths, you know the simple prissy look, but chances are it will go plastic as I can't control myself. I keep thinking Easter right now, so many ideas going through my mind, glad it's late this year. As soon as I get the house done I will be painting and building. Haven't given Halloween much thought yet. I enjoy Easter more.
