Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Walmart, Christmas lights on sale updates.

Recommended Posts

Please post here on any information on Christmas lights getting marked down from Walmart "only".

Just trying to make it easier for everyone to find and post, in one location.

Thanks

Stopped in at 6am, still regular prices on all their lights... They did pull them out of the seasonal area, and moved them into their own aisle now...

I'm pretty certain it is the same for all Walmarts across the US...

50% off on the 26th

75% off on the 1st starting at midnight (as soon as the new year hits)

It is all computerized, so if you see 50% off tags still on the 1st, just take a couple of items to a scanner and you will likely find that in the computers they are indeed 75% off.

Good luck, and bring a truck!

I have to tell you guys, other than the standard candy canes that normally sell for $2.50 each, I dont really like any of walmart's Christmas selection this year, seems most ALL of their leds are plastic caps on top of little led's, not what im used to seeing from walmart... anyone else agree? or have input?

I try to stay away from the colors from Walmart because they only last one season before losing their color.

But the whites are ok.

I like what someone else said about bring a truck,

Gonna try and get at least 4 cases this year..

And If I can get away with them, As many LED's as possible.

Good luck everyone! Merry Christmas!

My Walmart's got several hundred boxes of clear minis left, but next to no solids. I'm really hoping they're buried behind clears, because I've got more faded blues that I can count, and some of them have only been used one season! I might have to bite the bullet and -gasp- pay full price next November. Or spend the summer experimenting with spraypaint. But needless to say my Walmart will not have several hundred boxes of clear left once I'm done there on the 26th.

Generally I'm pretty disappointed with the Walmart clearance sales, except for as a source of mini lights and possibly twig trees (2008 was the last year for those).

They seem to do a slower markdown than other stores do, so its harder to wait for the stuff. Last year, I found goodies at the rural walmarts, but not at any of my

local stores. One store was relocating them to a store in town, where they would sell for a lower discount, so all that works against us deep clearance hounds.

It really helps to scout the stores in the days prior to the 75% markdown, so you can hit the stores with the most of what your interested in first.

For me, the target clearance is historically good, but my favorite are the stores with huge overstocks of extension cords and/or minis in the colors you want.

hey chance, let me know if you need blue incans. i have brand new ones from a few years ago and have never opened the boxes. i am from NE Ohio, we could meet halfway... let me know if you dont find what you are looking for sale wise, and if you are interested, I can get a box count.

I may take you up on that. The only blues I can find are 2 dozen or so Philips blues at a local target, but said target is the 3rd stop on my "journey" tomorrow morning, and by the time I get there they will probly be gone. I may not even go for the Philips blues, since they're the energy saving (read "dim") variety, and blues are already dim enough.

Just got back from WM with a literal mini van-load of lights - capacity was approaching critical mass! Only scored one "flat" of red, two flats of blue and green, and 8 flats of white. All the rest was "loose boxes" of minis, rope light and C7/9 strings. Sad part is it might not be enough for next year! lol Hitting Menards on way home tomorrow!

Hit one of our Walmarts up this morning at 7:45am and they were at 50% off. I walked away with 87 boxes of mostly blue incandescents. I'm hoping they last more than one season but if not, I plan to turn them into blue/white arches. ;)

I just picked up a $700 load from my Wal-Mart! It's like the find of the century. My Wal-Mart already had thing 50-75% off. I picked up around 25,000 clear minis, 10,000 red minis (mine from this year have weathered the season well), and a few thousand other bulbs. I then ventured into the artificial tree section and picked up several 6 and 6 1/2 foot trees. Looks like 2011 is going to be a pretty big show!

Good for you. I hit a bunch of stores today and nobody had any minis left, so around here ... the 2009 clearance looks plentiful by comparison.

Was just at one of my local WM's. They were re-arringing things, and nothing had prices. The stuff I grabbed (400 CT Multi-Minis) rang up full price, and when I asked about 50% off, they gave it to me. The had LOTS of 100 ct multi minis, few 100 ct solid minis (red, green, blue), some 400 ct multi minis on white wire, 300 ct icicles in clear and multi, and 200 ct heavy duty icicles in clear and multi. I price checked some of the other stuff, and it all seemed to be coming up full price, but a person working in season said to "remind the cashier things should be 50% off"....

Can anyone confirm elsewhere?

There local flyer says 50% from 12/26 - 1/1. Guessing on 1/2 they will go larger??? No idea tho

I am heading there in about an hour, will see what our stores are doing locally. The 1 walmart thats out in the country here has pallets of lights!

Walmart is NOW at 75% off ALL Christmas stuff. They started at 1am this morning.

Thanks for the heads up, luckily I was running a bit early for Target this morning and sat down at the computer and saw your message. I probably wouldnt have gone to walmart otherwise till tonite or tommorow. I scored big today at both walmart and target. Our walmart was still loaded. I left alot of the white mini LED's I just bought the solid color ones. Thanks again.
