Significant Damage From Tonight's Storm

Recommended Posts

How did everyone fare? I wish I'd fared better. Lost a light arch, several characters, a lid on a custom LOR enclosure blew off soaking 2 controllers, and my mega tree is leaning about 10-15 degrees and is being supported by just the light strings. Not sure what's gone wrong with the guy wires - all 4 are limp, but the stakes & tie-offs all seem secure. Gave the tree several good "manual shakes" at the base, and the light lines seem to be holding it from going any further for the time being... Going to be a very nervous night and morning at work until we can see what's really going on in daylight tomorrow afternoon...

I really feel for you! Been in the same situation in the past. For the controllers, get them indoors asap and give the circuit board a good bath in denatured alcohol (NOT isopropyl 'rubbing alcohol' as it contains 70% water). The alcohol will soak up the moisture and prevent anything from building up (mold, corrosion, etc). The alcohol will evaporate in a few hours leaving the controller clean. Of course, don't plug it in until its completely dry.

As for the guy wires, either the clamps slipped or the cables weren't retensioned a few days after the setup if they were new.

You -might- get lucky and be able to pull the MT mast back into true by using a come-along/fence stretcher on the guys, otherwise you'll probably need a new pipe section.

That sounds terrible and I feel for you. I've never had such major issues, but last year I had to put one display element up 7 times due to freezing / thawing / falling cycles. Even if your tree is crooked, people will love it!
