Question On Rgb Megatree

After adding several RGB(DMX) items to this year’s display, I decided that next year (2012) will have a full RGB pixel MegaTree. After reading some other posts I'm thinking of using 48 strands with 42 to 45 pixels each with a pixel spacing of 5 to 5.5 inches. What type of lights have other people used?

It looks like 48 * 45 = 2160 * 3 = 6480 total channels, I used LSP for the RGB stuff this year but 6500 channels is a lot of programming even for LSP. Should I be looking at Madrix to control the tree?

I did about 4000 pixels this year using S3. It's challenging, but is feasible. I think what tool you use will depend on what effects you want to do. Play with the madrix demo and see if it's worth it to you. I think your looking at about $1300 for a license that will cover 6400 channels. I'm going to start experimenting with Madrix to see how much it will help me.

The biggest key is planning. Plan and document your setup very well as early as possible. Experiment with a few strings to get comfortable.. then dive in.

btw.. i'm using mostly Stellascapes pixels controlled via Enttec Pro adapters from S3. Also some 6803 rgb items thrown in here and there as well.

Hi,

I ran 2240 pixel tree in 2010 - there's a post somewhere on here, with 6720 channels and did it all in Vixen. For 2011 we are running two full RGB pixel megatrees but using the same channel count for the trees but have about 900 channels of other RGB stuff this year for a total of 7744 channels.

Grabbed LSP2 this year but sadly even on a top end PC the near 8k channel count was to much and the output was not clean and stable. I do know many people that are successfully using LSP in the 4k to 5k channel count region so I have just pushed the boundaries a little to much :)

So 2011 is again being run from Vixen with sequencing being done with some very fancy video to Vixen processing scripts.

Madrix is certainly a great option but even considering the money i've dropped on lights it's outside my personal price range.

My goal for 2012 is three full RGB megatrees so it will be an interesting year to see how the various software options stack up

I have around 5,000 channels running this year, and like Aussiephil, I had a real challenge getting the show to do what I wanted. While I had 5,000 channels, I also had anywhere from 2,250 to 2,800 timing marks at 5,000 channels per song. Ultimately I had to break my show up into 30 second chunks, process the heck out of it with external scripts, and play it back with xlights. My 30 second LOR files were 200 MB in size each and my entire show in LOR format was 9.4 GB, not counting wav files. That was only 32 minutes of show when subtracting repeated songs. The end result has been amazing, but it was a STEEP learning curve. Now that I have some work arounds in place, the question will be 1.) what size pieces will I need to use for next year and 2.) what improvements will be done on the software side to facilitate the use of higher and higher channel counts.

The hardware is just so far ahead of conventional sequencing software that there are some serious challenges when going beyond a couple of thousand channels / timing marks. Luckily there are some amazing members of the lighting community who have been extremely helpful in overcoming these challenges.
