Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Just Got Home From My Dec 26 Light Hunt

Recommended Posts

Went to 5 wal-marts and 2 Targets this morning, found very few lights, although I did find 6 each 100 light sets of Red and Green incandescent mini's. No other lights except some of those odd LED's like the "flame tip C5" and snowflake LED's. They are all half wave and flicker badly. I was hoping to pick up some C7 and C9 bulbs, but very few left, picked up some red C7, no C9 to be found. I did find a couple C9 sets, one store had a bunch, I am gonna wait until they hit 75% off and buy what they have.

Target had zero lights. Lowes was sold out before last week.

Kind of curious to see if anyone has any better luck elsewhere.

The first Kmart I went to today had some Green incans...and I think red also. Most of the green were in 35 ct sets, but they had a few 150ct sets too. If you have one near you, it may be worth checking out.

I picked up around 2100 lights today from a mixture of Target and Walgreens.

I picked up 1320 LED cool white icicle lights.

A white rope light (200 lights total)

Two LED multicolor net lights (140 lights total)

An animated snoopy display with 150 lights

7 box sets of 60 LED lights.

If I don't have any problems with the lights next year, I think I'll be all done with lights and try for a few inflatables.

I went to 5 Walmarts and 2 lowes and 1 target. Most of them were out of mini lights. But I did pickup some:

15,000 Clear Mini Lights

10,000 Red Mini Lights

8,000 Green Mini Lights

550 ft. of Garland

Wanted to hit 50,000 more lights but unable too. Most of the Walmarts had just Multi-color lights and Blue minis.

Waiting for the 75% OFF sale to get more.

I hope you didn't waste your money on the C7s at Walgreen's. You will be very disappointed. As for Half-Wave - If they are connected to a LOR it won't matter much & if they are on study, try to find blinking LEDs. These techniques take the issue away from Full -vs- Half wave.

It started with a call to The Home Depot at 6:30 AM to see if the lights they had online were really there. they were and they put my name on them and i jumped in the car and off I was, I hit 5 Home Depots and one Target.and this is what I picked up.

2600 m5 cool white leds.

100 cool white c9 leds but there 100 lighted feet.

a few boxes of c3 cool white net lights

and some m5 cool white twinkling net light leds

and a few extentions cords and three way adapters at half off.

and a last min stop at Walgreens later tonight ended up with 6 boxes of 50 ct blue c6 leds at half off.

not a bad start, until I get my presale stuff in June. I hope to make the switch from a static display to animated in 2012.

I started at Walmart @6:00

28 box RED C-4 teardrops LED's

3 box BLUE C-4 tear drops LED's

Second Walmart

20 box BLUE icicle lights 70-ct LED's

1 box CLEAR warm C-9 LED's

5 box MULTI C-9 LED's

After that, it was all down hill :(

I remembered the post from earlier this season about using GREEN Walgreen's LED's. He purchased 5 boxes because that's all the green he could find... So I zipped over to a Walgreen's and I couldn't believe it, there were LED'S everywhere. I also hit it big at the grocery stores! Stopped at 7 Giant Eagle (food stores) and found Blue, red, and clear (cool) mini LED's + blue, red, and clear C-6 LED's. Between Giant Eagle AND Walgreen's, they made my 2012 display 80% LED :D As an added bonus, I also get fuel perks up to $.80 off per gallon of gas at the Giant Eagle gas stations! Nice ;)

Ended up with:

13 box Red Mini LED's

10 Boxes Green min LED's

5 box Clear Cool mini LED's

23 box Blue Minis LED's

4 box Clear warm mini LED's

11 box Red C6 LED's

8 box Green C6 LED's

7 box Clear cool C6 LED's

21 box Blue C6 LED's

25 box Clear 100ct Incandescent

4 box Red 100ct incandescent

Grand total of 182 boxes of lights

29 Incandescent

156 LED's

That is just my light count... I got numerous extension cords from Lowes... plus was able to use my military discount on all my Lowes purchases

2 giant LED bells... 1/2 worked... and the other didn't. I got them both for 5.00 each plus 10% militry :D

Santa in a chimney for on my roof

52" star

14 each 15' cords

16 each 9' cords

12 each tree cords (useful for splicing down the long 100', 2-wire outdoor cord so I can get 4 cords out of 1)

I have not added up the total I spent. And I probably shouldn't lol

There are several pre-sales running. Cdi has one, magic in the sky has one and holiday light express has one. I've bought from Cdi and magic and they both have great lights!

I did not get up early to hit the stores - I already knew it was going to be virtually fruitless as most stores were down to extremely low limits last week. I did go to 1 KMart- no lights at all; 1 Walgreens- nothing, then hit a Big Lots. They had about 2 display boxes worth of 35 count LED dome lights which I use for miscellaneous stuff. I bought about 6 boxes of multi's, 3 boxes of red and 2 boxes of cool white plus some larger ornaments for my Z-tree which I hope to do year after next. I sure hope this isn't a sign of what they're going to keep inventory levels at in future years.

13 sets of GE Red C5 and 8 sets of GE RED M5

1 set of GE Blue C5

2 5count Lighted Candy Canes

3 LED snowflakes

4 sets of 10 count Gemmy shooting star icicles

3 50ct Blue C5 and 3 Green C5 from Walgreens

2 sets of 9ft Cool White Ropelight

2 wireframe Mickey Mouse heads

There was a ton of LED ropelight left, so hoping it goes to 75% off. Very few LEDs or incandescents, unless you need C9s.

You are going to be Very disappointed with those Green LEDs you have pictured. I bought 1 box and thew it in the trash after testing. There was very little green color. I hope you fair better with the Blue & Red.

Last year, we bought $14k in lights. Took four runs with the pickup truck filled -- both bed and crew cab full. It was a good year for both incandescent and LED purchases -- mostly wal-mart, but also some from LED.

This year, we didn't even bother venturing out since our stores were void of lights as much as two weeks ago. I did venture into the closest walmart on the 26th around noon and people were scrambling to buy inflatables -- the only thing left on the shelves that lit up :)

Oh well, still got stock from that purchase last year to keep me busy for awhile.
