Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Get Together In Wichita?

Recommended Posts

I know all of us are resting after a hectic finish and are recharging ourselves to prepare for this year. Was curious to see if anyone would like to meet and chat about what we thought went well last year, what went wrong, and any new ideas they might be looking at for this year?

I have a few things I'm working on for this year and was wanting to see how others were doing.

Lyman I would be up for it. I noticed on lightorama forums there are two new Wichita members. I would try to get ahold of them.

With Spring right around the corner or rather already here - What say we do a get together sometime in the next couple weeks? I have a manager that will be needing most Saturdays off coming up soon until May so I won't be able to do much once she starts the planning for her party. I'm game for something say April 7th?

I do have this weekend off both friday and Saturday - don't think it's possible to get together that quick

I will ask the other manager about the 7th - I don't personally see a problem but she might be doing something regarding her family party they have in May.

Hi everybody. I'm one of the new guys in Wichita that you've all been kindly talking about. I'm not new to Christmas displays but I am new to PC. However my brother is really new to it all, but not a PC member. His gig is Halloween over the top, it's pretty incredible. I would like to attend your pow-wow but I might be several steps behind you guys. I have 80 channels (LOR) that I purchased last year which I recieved in November, yes November, and you probably already guessed it, my software came in November also. With help from my cyo kids I got the display put together, but no controllers. I was getting heat from the neighbors, so I made the tough decision to go static. Now that your up to speed my brother and I would love to join you, but will understand if were just too new for the group.

Hey guys, the 7th would be fine with me. If you'd like my house works for me. I don't have anything new for next season to show off, but I did fine tune the engineering of my 10 ft. spiral trees. Now I can really tell you what not to do.

Mark -Everyone one of us was new to this at some point and we welcome you and your brother with open arms and are glad you are part of the decorating community! We all learn as we go and most of us will be able to help you with how not to do something, ways to do something easier, better, and the nice thing about the small group that we usually have come to Steve's house is a mix of Animated Lighting and LOR guys. So plenty of info for both and I am more than willing to help with any thoughts.

I will bring over my donation container that I've been working on and some of my drawings for one of my ideas for this years display. I still don't know if I will do it, but the thought is still there and on the fringe of being a reality for the 2012 display.

I will go in and request that day off. I will just tell the other manager that it's important. She'll work with me on that!

My address is 1462 N. Coolidge, Wichita Ks. 67203 - phone number is 316-721-5719. Nearest main intersection is 13th and Amidon which is at 13th and the river. From Amidon and 13th go east across the bridge and you'll pass a quick shop of sorts on your left. Turn right (North) on the next street which is Coolidge. Follow your nose almost straight North for about three blocks. My house is white with green shutters on your right. There's a long driveway and you can come in the front door or the door on the North side of the house. You all want to do this at noon? Let me know what time works for everyone.

Well the 7th won't work for me. She will be out of town that weekend so I guess ya'll will have to have fun without me.

And she just called me and said that it worked better if she had Sunday off and I could have Saturday. Crazy! So I'm in for the 7th!

I'm listed as eagle5. My brother is not listed because I told him Chuck won't accept anybody with less than 32 channels and 90,000 lights. We all know that's not true, but that will be our little secret. It will be funny to see his reaction when he finds out.
