chartrand 0
Hmmm, I've heard imitation is a form of flattery. But WOW!!! I agree with previous poster, imitating a layout is one thing, animating the lights.... Well that would be difficult for just anyone to copy. Just don't tell him about Planet Christmas...... bigstott 42
All thanks for all of the posts suggestions and ideas. First let me say that I have had 2 days away from it all while my wife gave birth to our first child on 11-20 so it has given me a chance to step back a bit from this and re read all of the posts. So first of I am 98% static display so I don't have a lot of light animation so really I can't make it unique unless I go lor but he has just started doing the animation so I am not going to go there. Second the animation he has setup so far is pretty generic with little dynamics in it and he clearly told me he has no clue what he is doing with light animation. Third the things he has tried to copy are pretty half ass like his mini arches for example he has 4 like I do but one he only has 2 strands of led lights at 420 lights for all 4 so pretty light on the amount of lights and he won't know how to animate thrm to leap or anything. On the other hand this year have 250 per arch in 3 channels.... Only part of my display that has a lot of movement and are set to leap(he hasent seen them on yet)... Also he has in the range of 5 to 7 thousand lights and I am around 33k so again some other things that separates me from him so I am not sure still on my overall approach....I am gong to finish my last build piece which are my led snowflakes... Put them up on the 29th test at 4am and them have our lights on party... If I see much else of my new stuff copied then I don't know at that point....
Sidetrack73 5
Enjoy what you do.... and most importantly remember why we do what we all do... enjoy that first child... Congrats! I bet you will be making your own favorite Christmas this year with the new baby...! (noted that you don't have a favorite posted)....
Pumpkin 1
Congratulations on your new baby!! Enjoy your treasure they grow up so quickly. I'm glad your mind has stepped away from the confrontational approach, its truly not worth the aggravation ...the Serenity Prayer comes to mind in this situation...accept the things you can not change and the courage to change the things you can...keep the peace in your heart and enjoy your new baby, your family, and your display. I can 2nd that, this time last year we had our son and it was hectic trying to get the display up with a newborn, and it's hard to imagine it's been a year already and he is walking and talking. Enjoy it while you can, next year your child will love the lights, my son does, he dances to the music. And then everything with the neighbor will mean nothing.
ScroogeLightsUp 10
Blessings to you on the birth of your child !! Keep the peace with your neighbor and explain to him that your displays are too similar and suggest that you two can collude early next year to both have display's out that are different enough to give the public a better overall show. Since lighting is a distinct form of art I would offer some suggestions to him, (even help him if necessary) create some different layouts so it is obvious that it isn't a copycat. Good luck to you and keep us posted !
xenon 71
do I hear dueling banjos in the background? How bout you buy one of the Gemmy one of a kind prototype inflatables, or something along those lines. But sounds like you have it under control Congrads on the addtion to the family. Wonder if he will copy that?
ocsurf 10
Next year just put up nothing but a sign that says, "My Christmas display is at (insert neighbors address here). I hope you enjoy it."
Christmasjunkie 6
Congrat's on your new arrival. About the neighbor: We're all supporting Christmas decorating. In that spirit, you've inspired more Christmas decorating. Your neighborhood will be brighter and better with 2 displays. You've trained someone else to enjoy the hobby. Two years ago a guy came by on New Year's Day and talked for a couple of hours, took tons of pics, wrote down all kinds of into and duplicated my display the next year. He even came over a day before his reveal to get help. It's all part of spreading the fun of Christmas decorating.
RAB 48
Just trolling thru old threads trying to see if someone else has a problem similar to mine. It's my neighbor across the street complaining about the cars that park in front of her house to view our lights. Last night she said that it ruins Christmas for her, I am beside myself. I don't know what to do. I hope your problem has solved itself. As other shave said, it's nice to see other people decorating and imitation is flattery.
qberg 158
ask her for her favorite Christmas songs and put them in your show
Big J Illinois 479
I am glad I have the neighbors that we have. It happens more then you think, I would ask a personal question, possibly they lost a lived one around this time of year?

The kids had out free hot chocolate in the driveway on Fri and Sat nights. This year my 8 year old daughter is having her birthday party roasting marshmallows and handing out hot chocolate with all her friends in elf hats. Big J you are spot on with your comment. But it can go both ways. We are near a big Army base. The family down the street had just moved in and her husband deployed right before Christmas. It just so happened she was out for a walk the night he left and the kids were handing out hot chocolate. It made her day! She tells that story all year long. I have also gotten a lot of thank you letters and bottles of wine left in the mailbox every year. Very thankful for great neighbors!

RAB 48
Update, sorry about hi-jacking this thread. I added a couple of voice overs with my wife's gentle voice asking viewers to not park in front of our neighbors driveways and hoping to not sound passive aggressive. That seems to be working but I am afraid she is still upset. I started cutting back the hours of the show as well and finally decided that I can only do so much. Hopefully by spring she will be over it.
