Settings For Video On Dslr

I am using my wife's Nikon D3100.  I have tried several settings but not real thrill about any. I have added a pixel tree this year along with some more WHITE RGB trees to one side. This adds a bunch of brightness to the picture. Right now, the RGB flood lights on the house are too dark when you manually set the white balance on the front of the display. I have read a couple of threads about this, but honestly running out of time to shoot and get posted on the web. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Keep the "tricks" simple...I am a newbie on this camera ;-)

Thanks!

I actually was shooting this morning at dawn. Unfortunately I use a bunch of flood lights (rgb) on the house. The front of the display is practically all RGB and are bright. So honestly it's either too bright for the front or to dark for the back. Got access to a Nikon D3100 and a Cannon EOS 60D. Going to look at both to see which will be easier to adjust. Will also do as you suggested in the PM too ;-)
