I see places you can buy bulk rope lighting that says it can be cut every few feet. my question is two part. first how do you then plug said lights in once you have yourdesired length? can you do the  same thing to rope lights you buy at the box stores?

You can buy extra power plugs from the rope light supplier, most large spools come with a couple of extra power plugs and yes the store bought LED and incandescent rope lights can be cut usually every three feet.

Most LED rope can be cut and once you have worked with it for awhile you will be able to locate cut points. But don't go out and buy a bunch of retail rope and start cutting away assuming the cut length is 3 foot. I like using rope from Val at www.christmasleds.com because she is one of the few suppliers that sell rope with a twenty inch cut. Almost all bulk rolls with have cut marks on the rope then you just cut to the desired length and add the power cord and end cap.
