Fires and flood....I hope insurance covered that clean-up!
I read that this factory in Tarboro was the Empire factory originally.  Is that true?
Just a thought.......Do you think this closing will be the end of SeasonsLA?  Weren't they a huge part of GFP's sales?

As Mel confirmed, yes it was true.
Not sure about insurance. The fires were contained to a ventilation system so it didn’t spread throughout the factory.
As for SeasonsLA. Honestly don’t know. I didn’t even think they were in business still.

Yes, General Foam bought Empire and the Tarboro factory in 2000 after Empire went bankrupt.

Mel,
Thanks for that read. Very interesting actually. So did Empire completely go out of business after selling the factory or was it a few years later? The other question I want to poke it is, did GFP produce the Big Wheels? When I was at the factory and many pics I’ve seen after showed pallets of Big Wheels and even Sleds for sale at GFPs sale.

Very sad news.  I'm so glad I have my molds and will pamper them even more now that this has happened.  You can look forward to the price of molds on ebay skyrocketing.  Better get what you want from

I wish I had the means to by all the stamping, patents and equipment to keep it in business....i know, I'm a dreamer lolol

I just have to say, looking on scum-bay, the rejects have started the price hike already.....

Below are some pictures, I bought a bunch of big wheels and bowling pin sets. For the kids in the family birthdays and for toys for tots. The Big Wheel in the picture was made at the plant except for the metal pins and the lady at the plant said those parts were made at their factory in China. The sleds were made at the plant. They had large sleds and small one. I should have gotten some of the large sleds. The bowling pin set was also made at the plant.

The last picture shows the large sleds (blue and red) they are right  behind the kids pools. The small sled were behind the large ones

Thanks for the pics. That is so interesting. Never knew GFP made all those til I saw them myself in the factory. Then still has questions.

I don't see a date, has a date been set for the auction yet?

Mel

No, not yet. They said that they have yet to finalize for a date. But it will be in mid March.

It says the 350+ molds include toy molds also, I wonder if there are many toy molds, the fewer the toy the more the holiday ones.  Sad thing is that we will probably never know what holiday ones are included.

I’m still working on that. They haven’t finalized a flier yet. Which they are working on now which a date will be sent soon. Also they are still working with GFP on finalizing that list and getting pics. They also don’t know how they plan to sell either in a group or single. Also to bid online you have to have $5,000 up front. So I’m out.

I figure even if half are holiday ones that's still a lot of molds.

This entire process is interesting.  I clicked on the Hire Us tab and then Auction Process and they have very specific steps to doing this.  They do a ton of work to get the auction ready, bring in extra help, even bring in food for bidders on the auction day.   It also seems like the rules for attendance and online bidding are very strict.  Basically the only thing a bidder doesn't have to do is give blood.  You must have big bucks up front, tax id, letter from banks etc.

I can't even imagine how they would categorize all 350+ molds.  I wonder if the choice will be all or none.  I would be devastated to find out that all of them were sold for scrap.

From being at this auctioneers auctions before I would imagine they would sell them in lots of 10/ maybe more of the different season molds. That way the auction doesn't take forever to finish.

But I could be wrong, I have before.

Price of aluminum scrap here in Dayton Ohio is currently 50 cents a pound. That kinda gives you an idea of scrap. I've seen it much higher but you would really have to have the pounds to really make it worth while to scrap.

I would hate to see that happen, just like everyone else.

I'm going to sign up for the auction for online bidding to see how much they go for, when they get the date finalized. if they go for scrap prices I might try to buy a few

Too bad they don't have "no bid viewing" online.  I would definitly do that just to watch.

There will be an inspection day before the day of the auction for people to look at and check out what they are interested in. Anybody can go to it.

I wonder if they allow folks to take pictures?

They will be using bidspotter.
I haven’t created an account yet, but they said when online a letter from bank must be provided and you have to have a minimum of $5k up front. Also they are still undecided if they are going to group or what. They haven’t said yet. Still working to finalize the flyer and the master list and pics of the molds.

Watching this auction myself. While there's no way I have the capital to set up a production line for blow molds, seeing those molds being melted would break my heart. Hopefully, they'll break the molds up into genre, or at least not auction them as one huge lot, so they can be saved from becoming scrap.

And, looking at the pallets and pallets of partially and fully completed products, I can see buying some of those. Painting these would give my wife and I something to do during the long winters. LOL
