C7 LED Retrofits

Recommended Posts

What are the BEST C7 LED retrofit bulbs? And when I say BEST I mean the absolute closest to incandescent. I can't stand the cold look of LED lights, I am going back to incandescent's next year but i'd like to still use LED C7's to line my house, only because i'd prefer 1 watt per bulb instead of 5 or 7 watts. If I can't find what i'm looking for, then i'll just use incan's to line the house.

Thanks, Mike

I have been working on trying to find a C7 LED bulb to change out my incandescent C7 with new C7 LED (SMD). In blow mold sheep,TPI angles, and others that use a C7 bulb. Below is a set up I did to try to get the best idea of brightness and voltage when dimming. The first picture is at 124V and second is at 40V. The list beside each bulb is the information about each type of bulb. All of these seem to dim about the same amount.

The top four are C7 LED SMD. The bottom three C7 are incandescent bulbs.

The opaque bulbs (we call them ceramic style) would be your best bet if you don't light the harshness of LED's. The opaque bulbs lens absorbs the light instead of reflecting it, as shown above.

We have our pre sale going on now which has some pretty good pricing on C7 bulbs.

Go with the HLE bulbs.  Use 7 colors, substituting teal in place of blue - red / green / orange / teal / warm white / pink / yellow.  A total of 5 'warm' colors and the mellower teal instead of blue should create an overall warm glow.  I have such a set of 29 C9s from HLE waiting at the house, I'll be by in a few days to check 'em out.

The brand most of mine are Minleon type from holiday light express. I did a set up with the lights at different voltage and my lab meter is to right of the light display. One of the pictures I add incandescent C9 and C7 bulbs at the bottom. They dim pretty good the C9 go out at 35V and C7 go out around 24V.

Thanks I like the Nixie tube fluke meter. I pick this up 19 years in college. They we’re throwing out old equipment in the EE building and this was the only one that fully worked. I wish I had grab up the other 7-8 that did not work fully.

I just wanted to reaffirm that the teal LED retrofit is an excellent choice for incan blue substitution.

However, I ran into a supplier issue for 2019. I won't say who, if you want to know, PM me. The supplier I bought my LED smooth opaque (ceramic) bulbs from for 2018 changed suppliers for 2019. The 2018 bulbs were Minleon and I bought red, green, blue, yellow, orange and warm white at that time. The red, yellow and warm white were perfect in every way. The green and blue were too saturated, but the bulb envelope was perfect. The orange was way too close to red, so I didn't use orange. Also, the tip of these bulbs are blunt, like an older ceramic bulb.

For 2019 I decided to buy teal along with purple and pink from the same supplier. I wish they would have stated that they changed supplier (I made a pre-order, seems on their updated product pages they do now allude to a different brand name for the 2019 bulbs, but they didn't mention during the pre-order). While I do love the colors of the 2019 bulbs, the bulb envelopes are semi-transparent and you can see the SMD LEDs inside. And yes these are supposed to be "ceramic" or smooth opaque. Also, the tip is very point just like modern Chinese C7 incans. They are no longer made by Minleon.

So, just a "heads up" when ordering for 2019, I wonder if Minleon is still around? I didn't find any mention of them for 2019, and I can't find any new Opticore info either. I hope 2019 isn't a dud year for ceramics.
