Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. If you go about half way down the page on this link, Dan from LOR said that Chuck Smith does work for LOR. I'm still not really sure why people would be asking him for a sale though. http://lightorama.mywowbb.com/view_topic.php?id=22341&forum_id=81&highlight=Chuck+Smith
  2. I'm not sure how many people here got this e-mail, but I got an e-mail from ChristmasLightShow.com today talking about their SPT wire. They said they didn't raise prices last year, but with the rising copper prices, their SPT prices would increase this year. It said they had some SPT2 left and that is your last chance to get SPT at the old prices. Just a heads up. If you need SPT2 this year, you may want to buy it now.
  3. I went to my Ace a couple of weeks ago to see if they put their lights on 75% off clearance, and they told me nothing sold at 50% off, so they put it in storage. I went in a few days ago looking for something else at the store and I saw that they still had Light Keeper Pros at full price ($25) and light string reels for $5 each. I wonder how much longer that stuff will be out.
  4. When did you buy those Pearlized lights? I've never seen them before, they look interesting.
  5. WOW, that's a lot of lights! I cleaned all of my Rite Aids out of anything of interest at 75% off, and it was still a pretty good deal. I got somewhere around 9,000 lights from them. I don't have time to keep driving around for sales this time of year.

    Lowes SPT1 Sale

Thanks, I couldn't find that thread for some reason. I went to a Lowes in another state today since we are visiting family and they asked what I needed the wire for. I tried to explain LOR and everything (I need to remember its January when I do these projects) and the guy took me to the extension cord aisle and said everything I need is right there. So much for SPT deals. I guess I did enough looking.
  7. A couple of weeks ago there was a thread with some item numbers for clearance SPT1 wire at Lowes and it got deleted. Does anyone still have those item numbers they can post again? Thanks.
  8. Wow, I've never seen mini prices even come close to that low online before. Too bad the quality isn't good.
  9. I just converted my iTunes file directly to a WAV on iTunes, and it worked fine for me. I've never used Audicity.
  10. I used the iTunes converter and changed them to WAV and didn't have any issues. I had trouble with mp3.
  11. We don't have a Home Depot, but I was near one yesterday and all that was left was in a single shopping cart. No lights whatsoever.
  12. I've had really good luck with them as well. I've scored about 6,000 lights on sale from them, and it could have been more, but between Rite Aid and other stores, I have way more than I need for next year.
  13. I use the purple and gold minis from Lowes. I'm too cheap for the orange, and the gold is close enough for me. It was too tempting since Lowe's has Chriatmas in September now. I also use red. For my mini trees, I made a ghost cover to go over them out of white gelt and we attached black felt for a mouth and eyes. They're very cool, but I'm not sure how they would stand up in the rain so they stay on the porch.
  14. The Ace near me still has a lot of lights left, but they're still $4 at 50% off. I had been hoping they would go 75% off this week and I could possibly get them next week at 90% off since Ace isn't a place people usually look for lights. Today I talked to the owner (I think he noticed how many times I had been in the store looking at his lights) and asked if he could help me with anything. When I asked if the lights would be discounted any further than 50% off, he said they would not and they would stay until they sold them. Before I went, I thought about offering to buy them all for $1.50 to see if they were willing to negotiate to get them off their hands, but he was so adiment about the price staying where it is that I didn't even ask. It may be a corporate thing, but Ace seems like a company where stores set their own clearance schedule. Does anyone know how this works or have eny insight on any possible further discounts? Does anyone have a local Ace that is discounted further than 50%?
  15. Thanks. I love it too, and I think in the long run it will be best starting now since I have limited resources and can't get too big too fast and get overwhelmed. It's hard since most people my age don't understand why I do this, but that has never stopped me. It's fun when I hear people at school talking about my house and I can say I did it. For displays with window outlines, I think "Never Enough Lights" is the very best. They do some very cool effects with their windows, and I like their display in general. It's a lot like my house, but with a slghtly bigger yard, so I go to their videos for ideas a lot. This display has a very clean look, so it's probably a good one to show your parents. Here is a link to their video page: http://neverenoughlights.com/Videos%202010.htm
  16. Ya, when I saw all those lights I would have bought a lot more with how hard they are, but my family would have given me a hard time. I have 20 strands of multi-colored strands that I'm not using anymore since I switched to a RGW display this year and my family says I need to use all of those before I buy any more. (They don't quite understand the RGW concept).
  17. That doesn't sound like a bad thing to me. lol Showing them videos of windows done well is a good idea. That's how I got mine to agree to a halloween display.
  18. It makes me feel good knowing that I paid $160 for a new controller from LOR and I can use it for a few years and go sell it for $200+!
  19. How old are you? I'm 15 and I know all about the challenges of parents and displays. I know you probably don't want to do this, but since you have such a small display (channel-wise) I would leave the mini trees with just white, and then you would free up 14 channels. I would use 10 of those channels for the window frames, add some icicle lights to the roof, and then you still have 3 channels left to play with. I think adding the height on the house would really add to the display and turning on all the lights up on the house can make for some wow moments.
  20. Should have listened to the warning and turned my volume down. lol It sounds like he's serious when he talks about the TSO too! I can't believe some people.
  21. Does anyone know when Kmart goes 75% off? Mine doesn't have much of interest left, but what they do have is 50% off and it's still about the full price of other stores.
  22. I just got back from my Target, which was 75% off. The only lights they had left were solar powered, which I have no use for.
  23. Just got back from Lowes again. I went to Customer Service and once again they said the number didn't come up in the computer. I told them it was a non-stock item and he said he didn't know what they meant. They called someone from electrical and he said he went and looked the number up again (which still didn't work) and said he had no idea what non-stock meant and he hadn't seen any clearance SPT or Lamp Cord. Am I missing something? I guess I'll have to try calling another Lowes and see if they have it.
  24. Alright, I'm trying again later today.
  25. So they said it didn't come up in their computer, but they found it when you said it was a non-stock item? I don't get it, how did they find it then?
