Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. I would like to add strobes, but I can't justify spending $7 a strobe. Maybe in a few years...
  2. If it were me, I would either do a larger mega-tree or build arches. I think that a 10' mega tree would clash with your smaller trees that you built. How big were those? I took a 10' ladder and set it up in the front yard and moved it around to see about what a 10' mega tree would look like. It showed me that a 10' mega tree looks much smaller than it sounds.
  3. Any complaints come from a neighbor, they may find this in their yard... :giggle:
  4. If you signed up for the sale emails, do you get the email in advance and it tells you when the sale is or is the sale already going on when you get the email?
  5. Ok, people on the site make it sound like you can go to their website and they will have the controller you want, but they could very easily not have it by the time you are done checking out.
  6. That's what I thought too. That's why I wanted to know what he meant.
  7. I will be new in 2010, but my plan is to get a controller kit (the one that requires soldering) hopefully in the February sale and see how that goes. I am then going to make the decision if it is worth it to solder for the other 2 controllers I plan to buy in the July Sale or if I should get the controllers where you just have to assemble the cords. Where on the LOR site is the assembly book for the controllers?
  8. The good thing about being in school (I'm in this situation) is that we have all summer to sequence. I just have to worry about my job in the summer and that only takes up about 6 hours per week so it leaves lots of time to work on my show.
  9. Quick Question: What are you planning on doing with 5 Mr. Christmas units?
  10. Great show, especially for your first year! How many channels do you have?
  11. I have had lots of problems with the Wal Mart blue minis, but not with any other brand. I have just peeled the rest of the blue coloring off the bulbs of the Wal Mart minis once it got fairly noticable and used them as white lights.
  12. I have a tool that I found at Wal Mart for $1 a few years ago that pulls bulbs out, and it works very well for getting the bulbs out.
  13. Well now that I have said that I wouldn't do this, I have pretty much decided to go with the red, green, white look for 2010 and I bought a ton of multi-colored minis on sale, I am going to give this a try. I'm going to use green, blue, and red strands for christmas and use the orange and purples for halloween.
  14. Wow, I'm sorry that happened. It is sad that people have nothing better to do with their time than ruin other people's property and attempt to ruin the christmas spirit of others. It looks like they trashed some of your candy canes and giant C9s, but did they cause any other permanent damage?
  15. I would go buy a load of chicken wire and build that fence you wanted and say appearantly the HOA rules are only for origional homeowners.
  16. Very nice show! How many channels do you have on your arches?
  17. I do most set-up the weekend before thanksgiving, test run on wednesday, usually run a limited show thanksgiving night, and officially start the friday after thanksgiving. There are exceptions like this year though, when we traveled over thanksgiving. I always run through the weekend after new years, all the lights come down that sunday and all the cords get put away monday. (just finished a few hours ago)
  18. I know it's probably too late to find them this year, but where does everyone get spiral trees that are the same height? I have only seen sets of 2 or 3 different heights.
  19. I outline my windows with mini lights, and have giant snowflakes that go over the front of the windows. It looks almost like a strobe light in the house at times in the show, so if they don't want to deal with the light, outlining windows isn't the best idea.
  20. Where is everyone getting $1.84 from? The minis at my Wal Mart were $2.38 all year and the only sales I saw on that was the 50% off sale after christmas.
  21. Target really goes 75% off today?!? I just cleaned one out at 50%! Does anyone know when AC Moore goes 75% off?
  22. I saw mini lights today in a Target for the first time since December 6th! I have checked all over town, and have found pretty much everyone sold out of mini lights. I walked into a Target across town today and walked out with 2700 multi-colored mini lights for $25! That Target had tons of lights left, which was very surprising. I cleaned them out of minis though. Does anyone know when AC Moore goes to 75% off? They had two fully stocked shelves of clear minis today, but they were $2.50. I haven't seen clear minis anywhere since December 6th so it was a surprise, but I wasn't going to pay that price when I can just stock up in October and not have to store them all year for the same price. I'll go back and clean them out if they discount more though.

    lowes return

For sales, Lowes is very friendly about price matching. We bought a ceiling fan and it went on sale the next day and they gave us the difference back and were very nice about it. I am having problems with some lights on my roof that I bought earlier this season, and I went to take them down today to return and they took them back and refunded me what I paid for them. This was for a defective product. You can take those scenrios and decide what you think their reaction would be, but I think going back for the difference on a clearance sale is unethical.
  24. Well I also use Mr. Christmas, I am looking into Light O Rama just as you are. I have no idea how long it actually takes to write sequences, but if you want to be able to vizualize what you are doing while you are sequencing, I have heard of people building scale models of their display and watching it that way. If you had a long line of bushes that you wanted to have green lights on as a single channel, you could set a strand of green lights on the floor near your computer and hook it up to your controller. I did this when I first found my Mr. Christmas controller in September a few years ago and couldn't wait to start controlling lights.
