Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

    Ready to Set Up?

Well I started setting up Monday, it went ok I guess, but this is definitely the hardest season ever for me, and Ill never forget it. I really hate to post this, and i really don't know why I am, I wasnt going to, I started this post, and just had to get away, and I truly don't want to get anyone else down this time of year. But monday night about quarter to nine, I lost my Sun Conure parrot, Naggy, she really, really was not a pet, or bird, but a member of my family, and I, myself, and the rest of my family are just totally crushed about it, I mean in a bad way, we miss her so much. I couldn't set up Tuesday at all, no way, set up some on Wednesday , and Thursday, but needed to take today off, and spend it with he sister, and brother. I will defintley work tomorrow, and on , as I need to, and keeping busy is good, its just hard. heres a pic of my babies, my beautiful Naggy is on the right
  3. Love it, wish we had them around here! Wallmart just started putting stuff out, and I see HD is slowly starting to add online.
  4. doing bigger displays just take more time, especially the older you get, or the more operations you've had! it takes me a full 2 months, well this year 9 weeks. Ive always like slankard said, start with trees, and the house, roof, icicles, things that don't scream Christmas, arch etc. The real things like blow molds etc dont even come out for a while. Except for Halloween, I do maybe 20 or so blow molds, and lights, but not too much as it gets in the way. And funny thing I have 2 really big maple trees the UI will be cutting down soon, now I don't have to spend a week hanging Christmas lights, and ornaments, but I also cant hang the ton of %90 off Halloween lights I bought last year!!!
  5. WOW where did this topic go!!?!?!?!? Ive only read part of it, but WOW Big J!!! I'm really staring to like you more!!!
  6. No problem at all with the motivation, and Ive lost weight before set up season, during set up I usually lose at least 15- 20 lbs. Just a matter of getting everything done in the next 10 days!!! But this is the earliest year for me.

    Ready to Set Up?

I cant believe its almost time again already, I start setting up in 10 days!!!! I usually start first week in October, but this year I need 9 weeks to set up, and Thanksgiving is a week early , so next Monday it is!!! Ive been working all day everyday, for a while now, and on top of all that os closing pool, closing Gazebo, etc, etc. Just got thrown a cool surprise, UI asked if they could cut 2 huge maple trees down for me!! The one is half dead, so its a no brainer there!!! So Ill also be splitting, and moving a bunch of wood too! But these 2 trees used to take me about 1 week to decorate, I mean lots of large ornament, and LOTS of lights WAY up!! Not to mention the really big lights I bought to go up this year, Doh!!!! But the good side, other than no leaves!! Is of course 2 new Mega Trees!! Need to order parts, and start working on them!!! Anyone else have any cool things going on this set up season? As it gets closer Ill like many other not be much for a while, or least have time to post much.. Allthe best to all, and have a great set up!!!!!!!
  8. Thats great!!!! My guess the talk with the wife went something like this: You did what? You go, and apologize , and make peace now, or no piece later tonight!!!

    GFP Closing

OK so no offense , Why are they closing? Spot on post, I couldnt agree more
  10. WOW aren't some people just unbelievable? Ops new neighbor sounds like a real piece of work, or something! But I can beat it! Ive had neighbors living next door for about 16+ years. They have 2 daughters [spawn of mentally ill, white trash] For as long as I could remember the kids would come and play in my display [by play I mean run around and break stuff. I NEVER wanted it, but my mom would say you have to let them, so I did. They would come literally every other night run around, and have fum breaking stuff. Then the older ones birthday was in January, so scumbag mom would ask, you don't mind if scumbag jr brings a couple of her friends over do you? Well a couple of friends was 15 -20 screaming kids running around breaking things, and just annoying the hell out of me, every year! At any rate, had a fallout with the scumbag dad, after he threatened me one day, and haven't talked a word since, which is REALLY good... Fast forward to the year it all happen, when I would be outside at night enjoying display, and saying hi to people. Both scumbag mom, and scumbag older daughter who now drives would leave their driveway, and if they saw me lay on the horn from the moment the hit the street till they got to the stop sign beeeeeepppppppppppp no stop, prolly an 1/8 mile. Now let me ask is the term scumbag low life fitting? On top of that I know where scumbag low life mom works, and have friends that work with her, she tells all her coworkers what a problem I'm becoming, till one of them put her in her low life place, saying wait a minute didn't you and your daughter go over there ALL the time!?!?!?
  11. Awww that's sooo cute, I love it!!!
  12. I have been doing silicone at the ends under the end caps for years, at least 8 now LOL!!! I really, really don't think that's the case, because its happen 3 times, with only these lights, not any others Ive ever used. Plus on the last two sets they were both in use , the first maybe 3 weeks, the second set prolyy 1 1/2 -2 months, and on top of it, I cant see how the connectors would become loose with all the tape holding it together.
  13. J, try going to app store or google apps or what ever you have on your phone, and type in picture resizer, it brings up a bunch of really easy free apps that will do it. Or reduce the resolution of pics, which you probably don't want to do. Or one other thing you can try is setting tab on the picture on your phone, then adjustment, then resize, I know this makes the picure it self smaller, but not sure how much it reduces file size which is want important...
  14. I use the same, or paint from desktop, not sure about mobile, but sure there's got to be a bunch of free apps to resize
  15. Here's another reason that I mainly use pro lights. Last season I wanted to re wire my 3d star from my mega tree. The lights that were on it, were led rope lights from christmas-leds , they were about 8 season old, and still worked fine, but I didnt like the way I wired them, one was a split cord, and longer, which just erked my ocd. So i saw a great deal on a whole 150" spool of some bargain light from vida? I mean great deal, so I said with Ill get it. Well after I put my tree up, a couple of days later [luckily before going live] One section is out, so I take the tree down, and see it looks like a section burned out, I rationalize well I didn't zip tie this one section down well, I thing it rubbed, and caused the sheathing to get nicked, and it arched? I know long shot, but I mean the lights were totally burnt, I mean arched, black mess. I thought I took pictures, but I cant find them. So I say Ill rewire it, because I still have over 120'!! A couple of weeks go by, and I see one section of one rope is burnt out, but I'm not going to take it down now, It will have to wait till summer. Fast forward to this summer, I get the star out, light it up on bench, ok here's the dead part, let me putt around do this and that ,and I hear something, like running water, shhhhhh, about that time I smell it, burning plastic/wire, I look down, and now see the smoke! SO I imediatley unplug it, and wait for it to go out, I should've took a third picture, that burn went down below the tape for 1 1/2 feet, it was totally arched, I mean wtf hazard here. Then thinking about it, I originally forgot, when I first got it, and set the very first cord, it shorted out the absolute minute I plugged it in the first time. I know this sounds stupid, but I remember thinking way back then , I must have installed backwards, which would not make this happen any way... At any rate this is yet another reason/lesson to why I use mainly pro lights, I mean I still use some consumer lights like GE etc, but never again on some where that is hard to access during the season....
