Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  • About my display
Just starting, but I scored 15,000 LED christmas lights.
  1. It never hurts to ask right! So today while I was in Lowe's scouting out deals I noticed 24 boxes of GECE's. They have been on sale for 39.98 for two weeks. I asked to speak with a manager, and told him I would buy them all for 50% off. He said sure! When I put them on my Lowe's credit card I got another 5% off. So I got them for $19.00 a piece!
  2. If you have an Ace Hardware near you I would hit that. They also have professional grade lights for 50% off after Christmas. Yes they are somewhat inflated in price but I cleaned them out last year and I have not had any issues with their LED's. Loved them.
  3. Thanks everyone. Yes that was a bit much for me to tackle my first year and first song. I tried to get permission from the Boss (wife), to let me get the 20 foot santa from Lowe's. I thought that would add to the show....she thought otherwise.
  4. The song is from Bob Rivers http://www.amazon.com/Santa-Claus-Rivers-Twisted-Radio/dp/B000002IX7/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1323111144&sr=1-1
  5. Well it's been running for a couple of weeks. I must say it's not to bad. I am not a very good camera man though. Let me know what you think.
  6. Luckily just a funnel cloud about 5 miles from my house, but my Charlie Brown is MIA. He might be a couple of towns to the east. No other damage luckily.
  7. I might be starting over, we just had a tornado warning at my house.....
  8. I am 90% done hanging lights, I would be 100% but I keep adding more elements. All I have left to do is run extension cords, and turn on the LOR...and of course debug I've planned on that for being my first year.
  9. Yeah I never thought about that. I might try that. Thanks.
  10. I've recently bought a new house that has Verticle Redwood siding. Anyone have any ideas on a light clip that I can use to hang lights on the side of the house without using nails? I spent way to much time and money on staining the siding this summer and don't want to put any more holes in it. The woodpeckers have enough holes already!
  11. That is just sick, thanks Obi Wan Kenobi as a young Jedi I have alot to learn. My wife showed me on Facebook the link as well, and immediately asked me why I couldn't do something like that. That means I get the check book for next year!
  12. I wanted to take the time and send out a special thanks to everyone here on the forum for all the help that you guys have given me. Especially since this will be my first year doing a show, and hopefully taking in some donations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation! You all inspired me last Christmas, and I had the crazy notion of "I can do that next year." So with Black Friday approaching quickly, and 18000 lights controlled by two LOR controllers slowly going up I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. Now I gotta get back to wrapping mini trees.
  13. I need help with Carol of the Bells by August Burns Red. For the life of me I can't get this one done, because I have timing like Steve Martin on the movie The Jerk. Can someone help me out with this one? Thanks
