Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. Hello all. This is my 7th year of using LOR and I've never had any problems. I've got all my lights installed and went to turn the computer on and the hard drive has failed. All my sequences, audio, santa & elf jokes, demented elf voice overs, everything was on there. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share some of their smaller sequences? I only use 48 channels (32 for the house & yard and 16 for a spinning tree). For now, I just have the lights turned on as a static display, so I'll take anything. Thanks so much. -Dan My lights pretty much just flow up and down or right to left, nothing fancy. Here's a short video I took with my phone last year. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=2529516949489&set=vb.1000437702&type=3&theater
  2. Mine are up and running. We're at 5316 S Palmyra Dr, Virginia Beach, 23462. I've got one of my songs on my facebook wall (http://www.facebook.com/dantrevino) I used my iPhone so the quality isn't the greatest.
  3. Sounds good. I'd love to attend as well. Will Bill be signing autographs? For those that don't know, be sure to check the email notification box at the bottom of your reply. That way, when others reply, you'll get an email notice about it. This should help months down the road when I would have already forgotten.
  4. Anyone else getting their show video taped?
  5. Good job Sam. I was over in Hampton earlier today. I had a senior shoot and we shot around town and headed over to City Center (something like that) in NN.
  6. Finally made it by to see your house Chief. Unfortunately, it was that real windy night and a lot of stuff had blown over and the arches weren't lit. Regardless, I could still see what you had put up for your display. My wife and I liked it a lot. Keep up the good work. I've seen Shawn's in Norfolk. Still need to head over to Chesapeake to see Ralph's lights. Have you got everything working yet Ralph? Hopefully I'll get mine video taped in the next day or so.
  7. The boxes of GE globes/spheres/whatever they're called are on sale for $5 a box. There are two globes in each box. Each globe has 32 LED white lights.
  8. The Costco in my area has their lights reduced. GE C9 LED 50ct - $3.97 (multi) GE C9 LED 50ct - $4.97 (warm white) GE C5 LED 100ct are on sale, but I can't remember the price.
  9. Yup, that's how the Amazon downloader works - one at a time. Even when you're buying them. But hey, you can't beat free.
  10. I'm using your song in my display. I'm in Virginia Beach, VA.
  11. Virginia Beach, 23462, 19,000+ lights, LOR 48 channels, radio 100.1FM (Off Princess Anne Rd, between Witchduck & Newtown) By the way, anyone know the Chief's address? I tried to find his house the other night, but couldn't find it. Hope to get out and see other displays. I made it to Shawn's house last weekend. I'm going to head over to Greg's tomorrow (Sat 12/19).
  12. Hey Bill. I just wanted to let you know I saw the TLC special the other day and saw you and your house. Good job. Keep up the good work. Dan T
  13. Hey samhome, have you got your display up and running? Whereabouts in VB are you located?
  14. Ralph, I tried looking at your youtube video, but it said it was not available due to copyright restrictions. I'm guessing it was the music.
  15. Everything's up and running. Still adding little extras here and there, but the show is running. I tried playing around with a small version of a mega tree, just to see how it works. Looks okay. I took 8 wire trees with clear lights and added 600 LED red lights to each one. Looks great during the show. Has a great effect when fading and blinking between the red & white. I'm very pleased. Still didn't get any arches done this year. It will have to be put off again for another year. I like how they look, just don't have time to build them. Switched more lights to LEDs this year. All the lights on the house combine for about 4 amps. Can't wait to see everyone's display this year. Shawn, what's that name of the program you use for voice overs and setting the volume of all your tracks? I need to add one voice over to my show and I'm going to try and do it myself. -Dan
