When I was 4, 1955, my great-grandfather gave us each a pear from his pear tree. He had wrapped them in newspaper and kept them in his basement in cold storage. The look on his face was that of a man who had just performed a beautiful magic trick or handed a child the most beautiful gift you could imagine. My how times have changed. Can you imagine handing today's child a pear for christmas? He was a Pennsylvania coal miner born in 1876.
