Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. Today is Oct 15th 2018. This is my last day of accepting orders for the Christmas Season, I am working on orders, and will until all are completed. If we have talked about doing work this season, and you haven’t gotten me the info yet, we’re good. Just send when you have the info. I know some were trying to firm up details. This is it. I know I’ve said this before about being my last season, well this truly is my last year of voice overs. Saying thank you for the privilege, of being part of your displays doesn’t seem to be enough, but its all I got. THANK YOU for letting me spread the word of what you do, and in a few instances raise money for amazing charities. Thank you for making me feel like part of a community. Thank you for letting me have some fun. Thank you for your support over the years, you have no idea how much I appreciate it. May you and your families have a Merry Christmas, and may all your New Year wishes come true, and if one bulb goes out, may all the other stay lit. From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU! Kevin Thedementedelf
  2. I've been using D-light boards for four or five years with LOR and have had no problems.
  3. I have 3 D-light and 3 LOR controllers. I am using LOR3.xx with them and no problems at all.
  4. I just found this thread and saw myself mentioned several times so I thought I'd pop in. When I started doing this I did it on a whim, after adding voicetracks to my display. I then thought let me see if others would be interested in this. As it turned out yes they did and I've developed what i think is a solid customer and fan base as it were. I also know I could be charging more and I hear that each year. But I do this as a hobbyist. I thought long and hard what to charge and realized everyone has a budget each year, and most of that budget is going to go towards the flashy blinky. Yes I know I could raise prices will I? NO! I can remember a former boos of mine who always said its a fine line ....Pigs get fat, Hogs get slaughtered. I do thank those of you who keep saying I should raise prices. It means you like what I do for you. I truly do appreciate being part of your displays. If you ever have any suggestions or ideas on ways to improve what I do please let me know. You know how to get in touch with me. Kevin
  5. For those that wanted to run the tribute over the weekend or longer I re-recorded it without the reference of tonight. It wasn't any easier this morning trying to record this. I appreciate the kind words from those of you that have posted or emailed me. I so wish I didn't have to record a message like this. http://www.thedementedelf.com/remository?func=fileinfo&id=30
  6. Wanted to let you know about a new Internet Radio Station up and running. It's called Holiday America Radio. The idea came from the movie Holiday Inn. Celebrate Holidays Throughout The Year. Right now its offering up a sample of the year round format. Then in October will switch to music perfect for Halloween, the Nov 1 its Christmas! Give it a listen http://www.streamlicensing.com/stati...ricaradio.html Thanks
  7. MAybe make some of the display elements out of wood 2 dimensional and place them on the trailer bed with hinges. So for transport they lay flat.
  8. Ok, I just heard back from ASCAP. Their response was the same as BMI's they consider this private use. No liscense required.
  9. I know this comes up every year, and had on another forum. There seems to be alot of opinions out there about do we or don't we need a liscense. I decided to get the facts from the source. I called BMI and ASCAP. I heard back from BMI, still waiting to hear from ASCAP. But I suspect the answer will be the same. BMI told me that no license is need for HOME BASED displays. They consider it private use. No issues with using a part 15 transmitter. The only stipulation is you can not charge people to view your lights. Then it becomes a diferent story. I did not ask about if you collect for a charity. If your charitable doantions are voluntary, I would think you are ok. You're not collecting to allow people to view the display. As I said, I haven't heard from ASCAP yet, but suspect the answer will be the same.
  10. Thank you everyone for the encouragment, prayers and suggestions. The Dental Clinics ans schools were a great idea, but won't provide the one thing needed for my daughter. IV sedation. It's the only way to get her to sit still.. She is getting better the older she gets with both the ADHD and ODD. One suggestion we had actually came from someoen at my wife's work in the benefits department. Have our regular doctor examine her and if he feels the treatment is mediclly needed, have him refer us to the dentist and alot of the work can be covered through our medical. So we go to him next week and see what he says. To show how prayer works...I also received notice from a company that I no longer work for, but because I am turning 55 in September I will be eligible to collect a partial pension. That will kick in, in October and will be enough to cover monthly payments on the dental work if we can not get medical insurance to cover anything. Again thank you for your thought, prayers and suggestions. What a great community!
  11. I know this is a Christmas site, but I need a place to vent and to just feel like I’m talking it out with someone. Can’t talk to my wife, because she’s upset as I am! My daughter is 14. She has ADHD and ODD. ODD is Oppositional Defiance Disorder. ODD is a diagnosis described by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) as an ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile and defiant behavior toward authority figures which goes beyond the bounds of normal childhood behavior. People who have it may appear very stubborn and angry. She has improved the older she has gotten but today I found out how expensive it can be. One issue we have always had with her was her oral health. She wouldn’t take care of her teeth. When she was young we (my wife or I) would have to hold her and brush her teeth ourselves. As she got bigger that became harder and harder to do. There were times we would stand off at night to get her to brush and after 4 hours gave up. I feel like an awful parent for not being able to get through to her or to not being able to wait her out. This afternoon my wife took her to a Dentist for evaluation. The only insurance we have is what my wife has through her work. It tops out at $1500 max per person per year. Well after insurance we will still be left with a $9000 bill. I have no idea how we are going to afford any of this (no family to help out) but will do what we can. I’ll put my trust where it belongs. That is with God. I trust he will guide us and help find a way through all of this. Thanks for listening and for letting me ramble a bit. I do appreciate it.
