Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. Every time a LED light goes out, an angel loses it's wings.
  2. I did not rewire any of my trees but I did add Green and Red and I didn't use a single zip tie. I just wrap them around the branches like a normal tree and they are fine. -Richard
  3. Not sure what to tell you since I have not seen this problem on a faster computer. Maybe somebody else might know. -Richard
  4. Well try the WAV thing and see what happens.
  5. This year I switched over to a MP3 Director instead of using a dedicated computer and it will only play MP3 files and not wavs. If you have a mp3 file, convert that to a wav and then relink to the ORIGINAL mp3 file when you are ready. Do not convert the WAV back to mp3. Every time you do a conversion, you are going to loose quality. Yes, technically WAV files sound better if the file was ripped directly from a CD but most people can not tell a difference and there is no way you could tell a difference once it starts hitting FM Transmission. If you are converting a MP3 file to a WAV, they are going to sound exactly the same.
  6. On slower computers you may have some issues if it is a mp3 (I know I did with an older laptop). I would try converting them to wav files. Also you will have some sync issues with mp3s in the sequence editor. I work with WAV files in the editor and then after it is all done, I link it back up with the mp3.
  7. Lowes was the first one to hit the sales. I bought 168 boxes of white lights at 75% off on the 24th! That was the first time I have seen such a huge discount before Christmas Day.
  8. My favorite LED style of light is the dome style with the round top. I absolutely love it because if the top is facing you directly, it looks very bright. As you move past a tree that is wrapped with this style, it gives a cool look as certain lights seem to go brighter. The city has decorated a bunch of trees with this style of LEDs in their park and they look awesome Even though they are incandescents, my white twig trees I bought at Home Depot 3 years ago have this style and makes they really pop. I might be doing a new project for 2009 that will use all LED and I am thinking of using this style. I am thinking about getting involved with some of these LED Pre-orders From CDI or LED Holiday Lighting but they don't seem to carry the dome. Is this just not a popular shape? -Richard
  9. Sounds good. Thanks! I went to hobby lobby again and they were out of green also but had a ton of Red. So far I have bought 250 boxes of clear and 250 of Red and 125 of Green so I am a little short on the green. I am not even sure I am gong to need them for 2009 but I need to start planning and figuring out if I need more green and will contact you if to see if you still have some extra. If you don't, no big deal.
  10. Nice! I wish my walmart had green and reds left.
  11. I went to one target and it was also 75% off and went to another one about 7 miles away and they are still at 50%. Not sure what is up with that. -Richard
  12. I went to a new store in our area that opened up about 2 months ago and for some reason they had A TON of White LED lights. They are the GE full wave 50 ct ones. They were 75% off and ended up being $3.30 a box so I bought all of them. There is a good chance that I will be doing a commercial Christmas Display in 2009 so thought they would be good for that. I will be buying Green and Red LEDs from CDI. Here is a picture of the haul. Here are some photos of the other lights I bought a few days ago.
  13. I have been borrowing a HD camera the last few years. Time to get my own.
  14. I forgot to add that when you program your songs, have an LOR controller hooked up. When programming I have a wreath next to my computer with Red, Green, & White so I can tell how the fades are going to look. I also have a single C9 light next to my monitor that is hooked up to a Temp Channel in LOR so when I do have to bang out certain notes, I can play it back and make sure I am hitting them. The visualizer is not what it seems.
  15. I have been looking for a decent HD camera and might pick this one up. I think I will buy the HF100 model though that has no internal memory and just buy a 16GB SDHC card. Saves you about $100.
  16. Yes I meant Boxes. The errors have been fixed but luckily the post is only a few hours otherwise I would have had my post carved in stone and I would have to live in my shame forever here on PC since I would not be able to change it. -Richard

    Just venting

There are always going to be a few idiots. Last year when I was out doing traffic every single night I had a guy that refused to pull forward. Every time a car would leave, cars would normally pull forward and if they did not, we would wave them forward and they would comply. One guy though was not moving forward and I was waving him to move up. He just looked at me and kept looking at the lights. I went up to his window and he was ignoring me and I finally tapped on his window and he rolled it down. I politely ask him to move forward and he told me "No, I like where I am". I asked him again and told him that we really need to free up the space in front of him to get more people in here. He told me No again and that is when I had to turn into "Mean Richard". I finally said, "If you don't move, then I will be forced to turn off the display, and call the police if you don't move since this is a gated community and you will be trespassing. After saying that, He moved up. I had a few other rude people but 99.9% are nice.
  18. My Arches are about 18' long and I used 1" PVC with no guy wires and they have been fine. I use 36" stakes and about 20" stick up that the pipe goes over.
  19. Lowes in my area was pretty cleaned out but I stopped on one on the 24th that was about 30 miles away and glad I did. They went to 75% off on the 24th and I bought all the clear they had left (no colors left) which was 168 boxes. === Edited to fix my typos ==== -Richard
  20. This is why I try and run my display no matter what. Some people come from far away and it will be their only chance to see it. I am sure the mother and the kids were disappointed and thought that maybe you might be turning it on soon and where just checking before they drive all the way back home. I think it is better to run the display with some small problems instead of shutting it down Last year we did get some rain one night and there were 3 out of 17 GFIs that kept tripping. I still ran the show and just included a voice over that said "Because of the rain, our display is running crippled, you may want to come back another night to see the entire thing". This way those that did travel far away or others leaving town can at least see some of it. If you do turn your display off, I think it is nice to let visitors know over the radio and why. Also will stop others from knocking on your door if you don't want them to.
  21. Cool graphic layout. What did you make them in?
  22. The reason why I ask is because I have uploaded all my videos to youtube in HD. Here is music box dancer It starts playing in their normal format so you will have to click on the "Watch in HD" link below the video. Or you can post a URL directly to the HD version by doing this. &fmt=22 I am guessing that all the automatic stuff is resizing your video down to the normal standard they had before their new HD feature which they just added recently. I render all my videos out as 1280x720 and then upload them to youtube and they are all available in HD on youtube.
