Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. Ron and I will be attending the mini but won't be able to attend the dinner. Thanks Michael for reminding me with a private message. Just so happens I am off from work the whole week. The surgery went well and Ron is doing great. Still don't know how to get some stuff done on LOR so I am anxious to get a couple of questions answered.

    Orlando Displays

Hi, I am new to Florida but not to Planet Christmas. This is my first year in Florida and while my display looks okay with only 6 weeks to put it up and get sequencing done there is a few errors. We had to run all new wiring and get this ready to plug in. This spring we will be adding more power to plug more in but we were limited this year as to what we could do. Here is a short video of it. http://smg.beta.photobucket.com/user/lightitup/media/christmas2012part2009_zps958334a7.mp4.html We live at 27714 Lois Drive, Tavares Florida. 32778 Not too far from Eustis so I will definetly be going by tonight to see Beason lights.
  3. I met Calvin while Judy was there this year. I will definetly put this on my calendar. My husband is having major surgery on the 5th so hopefully he will feel up to coming too. I can't wait to meet everyone from this area.
  4. My first year in Florida http://smg.beta.photobucket.com/user/lightitup/media/christmas2012part2009_zps958334a7.mp4.html I just bought 48 more channels so now I can do a bigger show next year.
  5. I have a similar problem. Mine is plugged into light O rama and unit 1 plugs 1,2,3 and 4 go completely off when the show completes itself but if I end the show early they stay on. The other 92 channels go off but those four stay on. How can that happen when they go off when the show ends as scheduled.
  6. I don't know if I will be able to make it up to Gloucester again this year. I sure miss everyone. I am planning on going to my son's in Fredricksburg the first week in December so I hope to see some displays up in that area. I will only be there for three days as they are hosting a family reunion. I will be busy with that but I do plan on taking one evening to look at lights with my two granddaughters.
  7. Sorry everyone it has been crazy going home unpacking the rest of our stuff, then heading back to virginia to get my computer fixed and watch my granddaughter graduate., I am still gone had to come to Tennessee to watch my grandson because he had surgery Monday. I want to thank Frank for fixing my computer is such a quick time. I only had two and a half days in Virginia and he managed to get it fixed. Here are some pictures from the mini our youngest member Pauls yummy deserts The bring a dish was wonderful great food.
  8. I will be there around 10 Frank. Can't wait. Thanks Andy. I don't have the pictures for you but if Frank lets me borrow a printer I can print them off my computer. Ron is in the process of building a smaller one and we are taking better pictures as we go along so I will email you the pictures from that one Andy.

  12. Andy I tried to send you a message but unfortunately I don't think it went through as there was a bunch of incription at the top of the page. Would you be willing to sell a overhead projector??
  13. Oh yeah thanks for hosting the mini Frank. I will be there about 9:30 in the morning to help.
  14. yummy I like meatballs. A bring a dish sounds superb. I won't be able to bring one but when I get there I will surely get my friend to attend and bring something. I will be flying in just for this event so Noon sounds good. My flight lands at 8 AM and my friend is picking me up at the airport. I will bring paper plates and such if you like. It won't spoil on the plane. We will come straight there to help you set it all up. I will have to return the next day but I just can't miss this mini. I love it so much and have learned so much from you guys. Now Frank about that sequencing CD. How many channels is sequenced and can it be used with just my 48 channels? I will take it if I can use it this year as we are still getting moved down here. Just picked up my last load this past week and drove it down. I will never move again like that. I still have to unpack everything. Now if you all would like to come to Florida next year I will gladly host it....LOL
