Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. Time to make your runs for Walmarts
  2. Ron Lister and I arrived from Florida a couple of hours ago here in Gatlinburg, looking forward to tomorrow. Just checking to see who else has arrived tonight...and if there are any informal plans for a meeting somewhere?
  3. Sorry if this topic has been discussed before but I have several inflatable's that now just want to blow up partially any clues of why that is they all seem about the same year And I have used them several times but all of a sudden they started getting to the point that they are not blowing up fully Thanks
  4. I am heading over now, had to video a wedding last night in North Carolina (family) so had to miss Plus this year, will try to make up for it by buying something at the vendor hall. Just curious how many attended from the original Plus held what almost 10 years ago near Nashville? Not sure if Ron Lister made it up this year, we had planned on going together but both had to change our plans....
  5. Thanks for the Heads up, went for a few hours this morning to two stores here, got plenty of LED's and about 14 inflatables (about $8 or $9 each)
  6. Hi, wow, wish I had known about this. Is there a email list for the florida PC members? If so, I would like to add my email address to it....for I surely would have made plans but I haven't logged in for a few months now...time is flying towards the middle of the year already!
  7. Hi those that live in California...we are out here on vacation from Florida and are wondering if there are any nice displays close to Wisminster CA? We are about 10 minutes or so from Disneyland....we did see one display last night that is probably using LOR or AL...at 10022 Brookside of Brookview....had a little FM sign outside. Also, anyone know if RoboChristmas put up a display this year? All I could find was something that Kenny was saying they were having a problem with a Grinch in the hood....that would be worth the drive. Hopefully there are still some good displays going after Christmas...we have enjoyed the area and the weather has been nice. Thanks
  8. Looks like Lowes went 50% off today at 7am...looks like their online stuff is not available, so you will have to go directly to the stores...
  9. Can you post what your system cost and maybe some footage to see how the quality is? Do the cameras pick up in low light and do they need the infrared leds or do you also use flood lights? Is the DVR real time smooth motion, or is it still the intermittent video?' Thanks, I am always wanting to learn more about video topics...
  10. I noticed this morning that CVS is 50% off their lights and outdoor decorations in todays Sunday ad....always good to get stuff at 50% off before Christmas. Also noticed that Sears has the best deals on inflatables online....free shipping most of the time and look for the code to get off $5 more dollars on $50 or more orders. 12' santa at Homedepot.com for like $45- free delivery too.
  11. What a couple of generous hosts we had!! Gene and Lori and crew, thank you so much for your generosity....breakfast treats, lunch, and a free wire frame and clips and lights for those who attended, it can not get any better than that! I did not need any wire frames, but ended up buying three because I was caught up in the excitement! This was much better than I was expecting, well worth the time spent. Excellent speakers and well organized, Michael and Bill did a great job of pulling this off. Thanks to all those that participated. Thanks also goes to Chuck for not showing up, one more person in that classroom would have created too much heat and would have blown the roof off. The heat was not too unbearable...anyone ever invent or see a portable ceiling fan? Maybe something like that might help... Hope we do it again next year...maybe Chuck will make it up (bring a fan) after seeing all the great pictures Michael posted ...thanks again Michael to you and Bill and Lori's ...
  12. Remember, it is a "donation" box...no one is obligated to pay, it just allows those that feel inclined to pay an opportunity to do so. I have been to large displays in the past, I felt they worked hard and that the value to me and others was well worth the $3 or so I would drop in the box. It is really all about the people that come to see the display, if they wish to donate, they will, if they don't wish to donate, they won't, and I doubt anyone will walk away saying "I would have enjoyed the display, but when I saw the donation box, I felt so guilty that it ruined everything..." Each person has their reason for not collecting money to offset cost and that is what they think is best. What you do with your display is your decision, if you allow a chance for others to "give" back to the provider of the joy they have received...then that is perfectly fine. I am not sure where your donation box is....but if it is subtle, I don't believe people will feel obligated to donate, but only obliged. Keep your heart in the right place and you will be fine.
  13. Man, I can't believe Chuck is not going...I thought for sure he would change his mind and go at the last minute...so I decided I am not going now...it is such a long drive....wait...it is only a 25 minute drive for me, never mind...I changed my mind again...I am going now... Yes, if you are going north through Lawtey and Waldo, please slow down to the speed limit or you will be losing all the wire frame money you are bringing with you. These towns are the only towns in AMERICA that AAA motor club considers a legitimate SPEEDTRAP - thats right, they are famous nationwide! http://www.aaasouth.com/acs_news/9203.asp If anyone is leaving the mini plus early to go back south on these same roads, beware that the Gator football traffic is going to be very heavy going into Gainesville...I am not looking forward to it for I will probably be heading back after lunch...
  14. I can be moved from a maybe to a pretty sure.... I just made the drive from Miami to Gainesville Thursday - is not a fun drive, then went from Gainesville to North Carolina yesterday - passed by Lori's on the way up to NC, saw they had the warehouse door opened (lots of big wire frames inside) There will be a lot cars parked along 301, didn't look like too much parking was there on their lot, but I am sure they have it all figured out. Looking foward to it....and to seeing Chuck again, even if he doesn't make it there....
  15. Michael, I just got reminded that weekend won't be good for her and I might too have something else planned....but if I am able to go, I will be there for sure...I coiuld try to bring some security devices with me if I do come.
  16. My wife and I are planning to come as of now....we are looking forward to it and finally going inside Lori's warehouse to check it out..been by there many times just haven't ever stopped in...remember the days when they were an outside vendor at the Waldo Flea market...bought a couple of items from them at that time...Thanks to those for arranging this...
  17. Any C4s in multi that are left over I would really be interested to purchase from you...please email me or PM if any are available. Thanks
  18. Yes, I believe the light string is a little longer than the other walmart LEDs (which are around 15' and the c4's may be 20')....I targeted these mostly, a nice looking set of lights.
  19. Thanks for the reply. Is the black module common to a non gemmy inflatable? If so, where is is located, near the fans?
  20. I have the original bear that popped up out of the present, haven't used him in a few years but tried this year. It was a present that had no pop....his head just barely made it over the edge and didn't move. Any advice on how to fix? The vent inside the present was clear. I noticed the two small fans on the back kind of stick out the back kind of weird...not sure if the posts on the fans are supposed to be facing straight down or what. If I can get him to work, great, if not, it will make a nice present for someone else's yard...
  21. I enjoyed watching the video....very well done. I need to find out more about the High Def streaming, will study that more.. Thanks
  22. I bought a bunch of LEDS - multi color - c-4 I believe today on the 75% off at Wal Mart - yesterday there were two cases or red and blue LED's but when I got there at 11:45pm last night, of course, there were none to be found. Has anyone tried to take the bulbs out of these LED strings to make all one color out of them? I guess I can post it elsewhere, but I know a lot of people aren't getting a whole lot of the solid color LED's at 75% off (but if you are, good for you...) This is kind of my intention with these small mini c4s
  23. Starting scanning items at 11:56 - still 50%, tried again at 12:03, still 50%, tried again at 12:11, still 50% - was fixing to head up to the front of the store with a cart full and ask for the override, tried scanning one more time at 12:21 - 75% off....priceless...
  24. You are "Rich" with lights...but only three carts??? I am awaiting the Wal-Mart sale tomorrow to get LED Rich and credit card poor... Saw you on HGTV on their web page last week, good job. You going to Plus this year? Hope so, we can drink a few cold ones in the lobby once again.
  25. Happy 2009, hope this is a great year for Christmas displays and everyone is stocking up on some good stuff during the sales. If you didn't make it to home Depot today yet, check them out - now 75% off. I got there when they opened at 9 and was able to get 20 boxes of red c-7 leds for around $2 each. Funny, I could swear those were the same ones I returned about 4 days ago....less 4 boxes. One of the employees was heading right for them when I took them off the shelf, he wasn't too happy. They have some very nice Tinsel figures for the yard, if you are lucky enough to find a ginger bread house one, grab it. A really good looking set. Good luck...
