Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. I also used wood on one side to level the base. My solution for removing the threads in the bushing was to use plastic schedule 40 fittings. Threads came right out. This is my second year and no problems with it.
  2. I feel stupid too. Running 1024 x 768 and I only see 6 choices. Did move the bar up. Now what?
  3. I found a large cooler a few years ago in the garbage for bulk pick-up. It had a broken hinge. No problem as I only open it to add ice. Works great. I will try the wet grass idea also. Thanks for the tip
  4. If you have a friend at Best Buy that will get you cables at employee price it is real cheap. 50' for $5.00, 25' for around $2.00. I got lucky and went that way along with making some of my own.
  5. It's working for me read only. Guess I'm too cheap to pay to post. Thanks Chuck. Posting seems to work fine via my Droid incredible.
  6. Hello Rick. are you related to Bob Glass a falconer down in your area? I am the Chief Engineer for WTTM 1680 located in Cherryhill,NJ I live up by exit 8a of the turnpike in Monroe Township. Im just rebuilding after a housfire in2007 and starting fresh with 64 channels of LOR. Im also also a member of Planet Christmas. and thought I would send a Seasons greetings from my family to yours.. I probably wont be setup Till July 4th. as I amjust putting together about 40 3 foot trees. with Red and white channels.. so far I have had no luck finding Blue Light strings.... what are you using for extension cords? SPT2 cable? where do you get it. Take care Neal Newman

  7. http://www.1000bulbs.com/Rope-Lights/ They have 3/8 rope light at a pretty reasonable price.
  8. If you are going to HD or probably any of the box stores, Talk to the manager if you want to pick up a larger lot. I got 10% a couple of years ago for 50 cords. Not much but it covered the sales tax.
  9. Greg, Thanks for hosting the Philly mini. This was the first mini I have been able to attend. It was well worth the drive. It is nice to put a face to the names on here. I definitely picked up some good tips. Looking forward to the next event. Rick
  10. Thanks for the link. There is a lot of good music at both. Now to sequence and finish my flag. Soon I hope.
  11. I stopped at another semi local Walmart (about an hour away) to me Fri night just to look. They had a LOT (100 trays) or so of mini's left at $.30/box. Unfortunately I was in the ambulance I work for and could not pick up any. Got up early Sat morning and took 2 carts to the garden center. I realized quickly that they would not be big enough. Spoke to the employee there and he got me a U-boat. Loaded up 15 trays along with some other items and checked out. As I was leaving I spoke to the head cashier who got the supervisor(manager and assistant manager were not in the store). I asked if they wanted to make a deal on the remaining trays. I gave them a low ball offer. They got on the phone with the assistant manager and came back with a counter offer of $.20/box on as many more as I wanted. Unloaded the uboat and went back for 10 more trays. Left my number with them and maybe they will donate whatever is left to my project. Not too hopeful on that but good things do happen to me once every 10 years or so. I'll just have to wait and see.
  12. I started my flag last year. Ran out of time to finish it. I used 4x7 coro and had a local sign shop put the flag in vinyl on it for the daytime. Each stripe will have 3 rows of mini's. The short stripes will have 50 per row. Only problem so far is some strings of 100 mini's only have 99. I will have to splice in the last bulb. this is annoying. The longer stripes will have 78 or so. I will just black out the extra. Made a 2x4 frame to support the coro. Now I just need time to finish it.

    Circuit city

I had a friend who wanted to buy a CD and couldn't get a cashier available. Took out a tape measure to the 46" LCD HD tv. Sales came running all excited and my friend was able to buy the CD. The salesman wasn't very happy. Oh well. I know this has happened to a lot of people. I usually find Circuit City had higher prices than Best Buy anyway. I was looking for a camcorder for Christmas. CC was $399.99. Found it at Dell.com for $262. Even with shipping it was the best price I found.
  14. I hit 5 Lowe's this past weekend looking for clear mini's. I only found 3 stores that had purple. No other mini's at all. C-9's and some ropelight. I should have gotten them 2 weeks ago but didn't have the cash then. Hope Walmart will have some left this weekend.
  15. I sent in to them weeks ago with no response as of today.
