Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready??? Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

    1. Man... I need to get out there. At this rate, they'll be sold out by October!
    2. Agreed. I thought I was over it, but ended up adding it halfway through the season this year. Figured it was 4th year so it was time to do it. Like everyone else has said, it is definitely a crowd favorite! http://vimeo.com/33814178
    3. So frustrated! 2 Lowes, 1 Home Depot, 1 Wal-Mart, Big Lots and Hobby Lobby. No a SINGLE box of lights to be found. What is the deal this year???
    4. Hey Cajun, I built one of these this year and it is SOLID. We have had some really windy days and this thing stood firm. I built the single stage 20 footer and didn't guy it. I am using the Portable Hole II tethered in at the 4 corners. I am a believer! Brian
    5. Interesting that you mention this... We got rain all day today and, even though no show was running, I had some strange behavior. I had one channel just randomly decide to turn itself on. It stayed on for hours, up until I ulitmately decided to go unplug the controllers for the night. Curious to see if it comes on tomorrow by itself after things have dried up. Any idea what would cause that strangeness??
    6. Yep, that was me... If only I had known at the time to look around my house. By the time I came across it, it was utterly useless from lving in a puddle. Sorry to hear this... I hope it turns up for you.
    7. Does anyone know if there is a Planet Christmas discount for Darryl's site (christmaslightshow.com)? I thought there was, but can't find anything here that mentions it. Thanks! -Brian
    8. Hi everyone... Just wanted to let you all know that the trailer jack that is required for the JUMP is on sale at http://www.harborfreight.com/3500-lb-capacity-drop-leg-trailer-jack-47267.html Normal price is $29.99, it's selling for $19.87. I just picked one up!! Not sure how long the sale is good for. Brian
    9. I would also like to see the stars. Could you post pics? Thanks!
    10. C'mon now... this stuff should be on sale!!!
    11. I'm digging the Joy sign. I'll have to check my local Big Lots for that. I had big plans to pick up tons of minis, but looks like that won't be a reality this year. Kind of bummed.
    12. Checked out my cameras too. Looks like one of my presents fell over, but minis and arches holding strong. It's pretty windy here in NC too (by our standards, at least).
    13. I'm looking at incorporating a mega tree next year, unless I can actually come up with an idea of my own.
    14. I use MozyHome. It costs less than $5/mo for unlimited storage and runs in the background. Every once in a while I'll log on to make sure I can grab a file - gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. This also solves the problem of fire/burglary as it is off-site.
