Did you know?
  • The original Rudolph did not have a red nose. In that day and age, red noses were seen as an indicator of chronic alcoholism and Montgomery Ward didn’t want him to look like a drunkard. To complete the original picture, he was almost named Reginald or Rollo.
  • The Christmas wreath was originally hung as a symbol of Jesus. The holly represents his crown of thorns and the red berries the blood he shed.
  • The three traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red, green and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green symbolized life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty and wealth.
  • Tinsel was invented in 1610 in Germany and was once made of real silver.
  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.
  • ‘Jingle Bells’ – the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America. It was, however, written for thanksgiving and not Christmas.
  • Coca-Cola was the first company that used Santa Claus during the winter season for promotion.
  • Hallmark introduced their first Christmas cards in 1915.
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  • About my display
I started decorating the outside of my house when I was 12. Ever since then I have been adding on to the display. Every year something new was decorated. As I have gotten older it has been bigger and bigger additions.

  5. I thought it looked familiar. You did an amazing job!
  6. In my neck of the woods, Virginiah Beach Va, Garden Ridge has been at it for awhile now but they take forever and do not have everything out until mid October. There were associates at the Kmart and Lowes I stopped at on my way home yesterday putting out Christmas items.
  7. Remind me the week before Black Friday and I will look at General Foam on Black Friday. I picked up a Baby Jesus last from the warehouse for a "steal". Their costs are a quater retail if not more. It is also how I picked up, what was told was, the Marble Nativity Set that was used in the catalogue and paid only $100 for it.
  8. I went to Garden Ridge in Chesapeake, Va yesterday on a whim and was surprised to see Christmas was already going out. I know Christmas will not be out in force until September. As For Halloween, there was maybe 3 asiles worth of Halloween but closer to October they normally have more Halloween. My son did pick out the Frankenstien to add to the display and I could not blame him. The one we brought home had a decent paint job. I cannot wait to see what it looks like when lit.
  9. Ralph, I wish I could be going with but Uncle Sam will be needing me so I will be missing out. Please take great notes for me and lots of pics and next plus the Weavers will be staying there! Lloyd
  10. A trip to big lots is in order. I always find the best selection of totes there. I do not go anywhere else.
  11. I just wanted to thank everyone for the wonderful mini and for putting up with my son and I. I cannot wait for him to get older so he can really get bitten by the bug.
  12. Hello All, I will be leaving around 9am and will be bringing my large arch and a few other things. I will be stopping by a store up there to grab something for the luncheon. Look forward to seeing everyone. Lloyd.
  13. I wanted to let everyone know that I might not be able to make it. My father just got out of the hospital last night. He will be needing to have a valve replaced sometime in the next three weeks. Depending on how the surgery goes and when he comes home, I might be at home taking care of him.
